Here's my honest assessment

The views are amazing from our apartment in the 200 building. The kitchen and bathroom were updated with new applicances although the faucet in the kitchen sink constantly comes loose. The builidings are very very dated. Like circa 1984. Windows are cumbersome. Hallways on first floor smell a bit like the trash room. Neighbors are fine, supers are usually helpful, but don't expect much from doormen. We've lived in luxury buildings before and this isn't a luxury building. It's average. But it was more space with great views. The rents are market rate but slightly lower than the new buildings. One bed with river views will cost you $3000. Lots of rent stabalized apartments which aren't available to new tenents. In hindsight we would have moved to one of the new buildings in BPC. We'll move out when our lease is up at the end of a year. One year in Gateway was good enough for us.

I lived in Gateway for 7 years before finally moving out. While it does take a while for the maintenance to get done and sometimes it takes some arguing with the repair guy as to what's wrong to get it fixed, the general staff are pleasant. What is not pleasant is heller and the way they try to rip people off when they move out. I know previous tenants who had lost their deposit because the wall was a slightly different white than the original paint. They charge $550 for a second coat of paint (which other painting companies I've spoken to said was completely unnecessary to paint a wall from vanilla to white). I had a similar experience myself although I did not alter the color of the paint but nonetheless, they tried to claim my deposit. I think they are using a slightly different shade of paint based on some of the remaining friends I had visited in gateway. Good thing I took picture of the apartment right after I moved out but before I handed in my keys in case I need something to prove my case in court.
To anyone who is moving out of an apartment, especially gateway, I recommend asking the people to walk through the apartment with you before moving out to make sure there are no hidden surprises later. And even then, take pictures and keep copies of the maintenance repairs (I scan mine into my computer). You never know when you will need them again.
