After living in what is considered "The Real Manhattan" I took an apartment on Roosevelt Island at Manhattan Park, still considered "Manhattan".
I read the reviews, which were not all positive, but decided to check things out myself. I did not like the feeling of walking through town. The center of town gave me a feeling of it being run down a bit. I found walking along the river a better path to take if need be! The red bus was there to greet us as we exited the tram for a cost of 25 cents and the red bus did stop for those who took the "F" train. The bus took us to the rental office, and we were told it runs every 15 minutes or so.
Nice! No problem there....
If we wanted parking we were told by the garage it would be $180.00 a month..fair enough.
The apartment complex said we could have our guests park for free for a short time if they handed the Concierge a drivers lic. Not bad!
We viewed the apartments...some look old, some had been re-done. I chose the newer, updated features. Some had views for more money, I didn't see any bad views. I liked the size for the money! Here in Manhattan....SIZE DOES MATTER!!!! Good kitchens, a little strange on their pass thru kitchen heights but it works. I love the dishwasher! YES!
I loved the balconys! Yes...out door space! They even let us go to the top floors in each building to read or sunbath. Huge deck with a view!
The Farmers Market comes across the street every Saturday...even when it's cold! YES! YES! We now have four restaurants and a Starbucks! Fresh direct delivers here a couple of times a day.
Everyone seems nice enough. The rental office person went out of her way for us and when a charge on our bill was disputed by us, the management took it off right away after I brought it to their attention.
Will I stay....YES! Will I tell my friends' Yes, of course! You can't always please everyone but Manhattan Park is not what the nay sayers have said.........we are lucky to have a large apartment with a killer view, safe area, friendly and very affordable!
No horns honking! It's safe! This is our home!

Congratulations! MP, despite it's misleading name, is a nice place to live on RI. I just had a couple of questions for you as a current tenant. Also, I wanted to let you know a few things, just so there are no surprises for you. I have lived here for several years and have never had the concierge tell me about the guest passes. How much is the guest pass, and who do you get the guest pass from? I would love to know.
As for the top floor, are you sure about this? I was told that I could only go to the 18th floor (which is not the top), and I can sunbathe before sunset, but the minute it starts getting dark, I have to come in, and no drinks/food allowed. Plus it's not the nicest deck, because some machinery is up there.
And I'm a big fan of the farmers market, but as long you remember, it's not like Manhattan farmer's markets. It's convenient and somewhat cheaper than gristedes, but it's mostly (especially in the winter) from supermarkets. In the summer and fall, they tend to have more backyard, homegrown stuffs, but not as much as the union sq. market. It is misleading because they buy the onions and potatoes for example wholesale, and then they open the bags and sell them separately, making them look like it was just dug up in the backyard.
Fresh direct is awesome. The prices are a bit high, but you are paying for convenience and the quality and taste is quite good. The four restaurants and starbucks, it's nice to have them, but the food is not that great compared to Queens or Manhattan. Starbucks, the turnover is low, so the baked goods not as fresh, and my friend who is a coffee lover says the coffee is not made as well as Manhattan Starbucks locations where people know how to make a cafe au lait or frappucino, etc.
Other than the negative sides, I truly love and enjoy living here. It's safe, it's beautiful, and the neighborhood is friendly. It's worth the extra commute and inconvenient public transportation on weekends and late nights for me, and I've gotten used to doing my grocery shopping during weekdays on the way home from work in Manhattan so I don't pay an arm and a leg for Gristede's over priced foodstuffs. I hope you enjoy, if you decide to move in, your stay here.
