This is a good place if you have a family. Singles will probably find it a bit too quiet. By New York standards it's very safe and has a strong community feeling. We are always reading about the shootings in Brooklyn and Queens and feel very glad that we moved here. There are quite a lot of activities on for children and a very nice outdoor space where you can ride bikes, go for walks etc.

It's worth paying a bit extra to get an apartment with a Manhattan view as you really do get amazing views along the east river and to Manhattan mid-town. Most of the apartments are market rent so it's not cheap, but you will get more space for your money than if you are living in Manhattan proper.

As mentioned on other posts, the staff lack the typical US 'have a nice day' attitude but all the same, maintenance issues do get attended to eventually and on the whole they do their job. This is New York !!!! You will come across short tempered and miserable people every day so get used to it !!!

Roosevelt Island is very multi-cultural and very international. A lot of UN staff and delegates choose to live here (myself included).

The local supermarket Gristedes is overpriced but does have a good range of products (again don't expect the US 'have a nice day'). There is a little market that comes up on Saturdays that is very well priced and has a great range of fresh produce. You can also walk over the bridge to Queens with your shopping trolly and go to the Costco where you can get bulk items at very cheap prices (20 minutes walk each way).
