Greed, Greed, and more Greed

I just moved out after being a loyal, always-on-time rent paying tenant for 2 years. I, too, had the problems with the cigarette smoke infesting the hallways and coming into my apartment. Management did NOTHING about it for months and months.. then finally sent a handyman to install a cheap $2 door-sweep under my door and some 99 cent weather stripping around my door...all while asthma and allergies caused me to be miserable. Gee, thanks. $4295 a month for that. When it was time for lease renewal, I was offered an INCREASE in rent.. in THIS economy. No thanks! I offered to stay if they lowered the rent, and the greedy management said to take a hike. I did. Guess what' The apartment is STILL sitting there unrented. They've lost in 2 months what they could have gotten from me in concessions by lowering my rent to a representative rate. I moved to the upper west side and got a better deal in a better neighborhood in a less corporate-greed-minded building. I am in the process of suing Related Rentals for the defects in the building that cause horrible odors, cigarette smoke, and ANY SOUND YOU CAN POSSIBLY THINK OF to infiltrate neighboring apartments. Read your lease CAREFULLY. They now put a clause in there that you agree NOT to sue them if there are odors, cigarette smoke, etc as a result of any building defect. Other problems are the doormen/porters have low morale because of iron-fisted techniques the management is using on them (moving long-time day employees to the night shift, asking them to do things way out of the ordinary, etc). Also, I could write volumes on the elevators. Be prepared to wait.. wait..and WAIT longer. Even after the elevators were "fixed" they were still a problem with skipping floors, opening halfway, and suddenly shooting up to the penthouse level randomly. Finally..they've hired some 20-something arrogant, slick salespeople to work in the leasing office who know nothing about customer service or genuine behavior. For the money (TOP of the market rent rate for MUCH less than "luxury" features) you can certainly do better, especially in this borderline neighborhood near Spanish Harlem. There are some long-time residents in the building who are loud, uncouth, and chain smoking, pot-smoking people who congregate in the stairwells at all hours of the night and have been caught smoking in the hallways and stairwells many times (again..nothing was done to stop this). This company is concerned with only one thing.. making a buck at the expense of all decency, tact, and good business practices.
