We've lived in the 55 West End Ave building for almost a year now without any real problems. The apartment is clean and spacious, and the rent is less than it would be if we weren't so far west on the island. The subway is a 10-15 minute walk, but there's a shuttle bus that runs during rush hour. My only gripes so far is that the A/C in the living room doesn't circulate that well, so we leave it on more than we had to in our last apartment (then again the living room is bigger), and the doormen are kind of unhelpful. They'll do the usual packages and drycleaning, but they gave our dog walker a hassle about picking up a key everyday until we finally just gave her the spare. We are in an end unit, next to the construction, but the noise rarely bothers us. Also someone on our floor is a heavy smoker and the entire hallway smells, but I wouldn't fault the building for that. Noise from neighbors has never been an issue. I worried about safety since the projects are just across the street, however I haven't had any reasons to worry since we moved in. Rental office was nice when we were signing the lease; haven't had to deal with management since.
