Don't believe the hype

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2006

I lived in the Century for 2 years and my experience was not a great one. For one, I was probably the youngest tenant in the building and although I am white, my boyfried is Puerto Rican--and we were not accepted by many. The majority of the staff was kind, but one of the doormen was very rude to me, my boyfriend and my guests (who were usually not white). He often lied to us (telling us the phone was broken and he couldn't call a cab--did this several times, including on xmas eve, only to see him call a cab for a white man 5 min later) and would badger us if we were waiting in the lobby for someone. We later found out that he had a history of this; several years back someone sued him and won a settlement--yet he is still there.

The apartments have a great view and I had new appliances, but that's about it. The "wood floors" that they boast are simply glue down squares that crack when you walk on them. The floors are thin and the walls have been repainted without being scraped.

Although I paid my rent on time everyone month for the 2 years I lived there, they opted not to renew my lease because they claimed that when a worker was in my apartment to repair my broken (new) dishwasher, they saw roaches and thus my apartment was deemed to be "filthy." Number one, there is an exterminator that comes every week to the building, so I know I'm not the only person in the building that had roaches. Number 2, try have a broken dishwasher with water sitting in it and tell me that roaches won't flock to it.

They also claimed that worker reported that there was dog feces all over my apartment and I didn't pick it up. That is such a blatant lie it was amazing. They had me on camera walking my dog at least 3 times a day, so I don't know when she found the time to poop everywhere...they also claimed that my dog urinated in the hallway, the elevator and the entrance way--again a lie. I've heard that the building is no longer pet friendly--but there were a lot of dogs when I lived there--the super had a dog as well--so don't know if that rule applies to older tenants.

I felt unwelcome from the start. Many of the people-although not all-have an attitude problem. Seeing a young, inter-racial couple, that were doing well for themselves did not sit well with many people. I never had loud parties, never trashed my apartment, and was either at work, at school, or at home studying, so I did not create a lot of noise.

The best part was that after they said they would not renew my lease, they wouldn't let me move out a month early, so I was paying rent on my new apartment and the century for a month while I wasn't even living there.

If you are looking to live there, be prepared for a high rent, that will increase at least $100 when you renew it (and this was only for a studio), problems finding parking (unless you get a spot in the overpriced parking garage--about $300 a month) and people with attitudes.

Good Luck!
