Cheap With Lots of Entertaining Drama

Friday night. I'm at home. There's nothing good on TV. I hear a woman's scream coming from outside my third floor window. I go for a closer look. Two males and a female are screaming outside. I turn out the lights in my apartment, pull up a chair, and grab a beer. Friday night entertainment is here!

I had a one bedroom one bath apartment for three months ($627/mo). This included rent, water, wireless internet, carport, heat, and a storage unit in the basement. The only thing I had to pay for was electric (which was anywhere between $25-$60).

So while this place was ridiculously cheap, it had quite a few drawbacks. I always told my friends I lived in a senior citizen home because well, there are a TON of Russian senior citizens around. I don't have anything against old people (let's face it, we're all going down that path), but the blasting the TV at 6AM is a little painful for me. There was one younger group living downstairs (Friday night entertainment) and they usually blasted their TV till 2AM. Then there were the trains. I will admit you do kinda get used to them (I sadly miss them now), but it took a good month before I could sleep with them. I'm a light sleeper.

The apartment itself was a pretty good size, but the building and appliances were very very old. The walls are incredibly thin and you can hear other people's TV and such even when they weren't blasting them. Oh and old people smoke a lot. Even though I lived on the third floor, the cigarette smoke coming from outside somehow made it's way to the third floor and up my nose. Same with the lovely skunk smell Rochester gets.

Laundry is in the basement (two washer/two dryers) shared by, I think, three units' I mean that's about 20 families sharing them. I never really had a problem when I went to use them though. It's $1.50 for wash and $1.00 for drying. However, it is HELLA CREEPY going down there. The storage units are also down in the basement and mine was broken into. The metal bar used to close the unit was pried off, but the thief was nice enough to only steal one thing and then took the time to screw the plate back in. He did do a mighty nice job screwing the plate back in, very sturdy. There have also been issues with the mail being stolen. There are individual little cubbies for packages and anyone can open them and grab the package.

Maintenance was pretty good though. I called for them to fix the living room light because it didn't work and they were there within half an hour to fix it. They mailed me a letter saying they were going to have someone repaint the area above the door; no one ever came though.

So in the end, this place wasn't that bad for three months. If I had to live there for a year, well I might have snapped between the strange smells and not ever sleeping. Oh, there was also a lot of incidents where people tried to break in. In order to get into the building, someone has to buzz you up. Well, late in the night, people would come to the buildings, hit every buzzer and see who would open the door. My downstairs neighbor got the bright idea to let the thief in. The thief ended up breaking into his apartment. So my point is, there is always something going on at the complex and while it's fun to watch when it's happening to someone else, it's not so great when it happens to you. Be careful if you live here!

P.S. Parking isn't really that big of an issue if you get home before say 8PM. Then you'll probably have to park in one of the parking lots and walk. Late at night. When there are robbers lurking. No biggie, right'
