Good enough, but lacks a LOT

We moved in at the beginning of August '06, we were expecting an apartment that had the 'updates' we were told about from another resident we knew (new carpet, new kitchen cabinets, etc), but they did NO work on the apartment, and it hardly looked clean. Not only was the old crappy kitchen untouched, the carpet was in bad shape, stains and fraying spots all over. We had 2 large (like 3') cracks in two of the windows, and were told they would be fixed in 2 weeks (i.e. Mid-August). Well, it's November now, and we still have 2 large cracks in our windows. When I asked them a couple weeks ago about the windows, their response was "Everyone is waiting on windows." Apparently they don't know about the broken window theory of crime. Within a month 2 of the overhead kitchen lights have burned out. Whenever our neighbors go up the stairs, or even walk around their apartment, our entire living room floor bounces. Our fridge randomly decided to not work on a Friday night and go warm, to which the after-hours maintenance guy said, "Turn the fridge temp down and wait. We can maybe get you a replacement on Monday, maybe, I'll have to check with my boss." Gee, thanks a lot. I wouldn't want to bother you to come over and fix (or even look at) our fridge after hours, so we'll just wait for the food to rot and on Monday we 'maybe' will get a replacement. I ended up fixing it myself, chipping an ungodly amount of ice from the vents in the back of the fridge compartment. There is a dog next door (in a random house that is not part of the complex and occupied by white trash) that barks at all hours of the day (there are actually 2-3 dogs over there, but only 1 needs a bullet in the head). The other tenants seem nice enough, and other than the stupid dog, the area is pretty quiet and out of the way. The speedbumps are a pain in the ass. The rent prices are 'eh' ($820/mo for a 1 bedroom end unit plus a pet fee ($10/mo), heat hw included) and from talking with other tenants it sounds like the rent went up $75 /mo over the last year. You'll pay an extra $10 for an upper unit, and another $10 for an end unit (which we have... it's worth it), over the 1 bedroom lower prices. The management is supposedly open on Saturdays, but I have yet to see anyone there in the 4 times I've gone over to see them on a weekend to get stuff fixed. Laundry is not a problem, but my building is close to the facility so I can reasonably walk there. If you don't live in a close building, it will be a pain in the ass and require your car, particularly in winter. Laundry room is usually filthy, and though there are plenty of machines (16 washers, 16 dryers'), 3 of each are almost always broken for one reason or another. Laundry is $1.25 per wash, and $.60 to dry for 30 minutes (so $1.20 for a reasonable dry time). The 'gym' is fine, with 2 tv's, maybe 5 treadmills and 1 elliptical, some free weights and a bench with lifting weights, and one multi-purpose (arms, legs, etc) machine, they have a decent clubhouse you can use for parties with a $150 refundable deposit, and they apparently have a pool and (broken net) tennis courts behind the main office.

Bottom line: You'll ----- a lot, but if you have dogs or cats, this place may be one of your only choices in the area. If you don't have pets, then find someplace else to live.
