When I decided to move in to Country Gardens, it was sight unseen. I was new to the area and spoke to the apaartment manager, Cathy, about apartments in Troy. She said no other apartment complex was safe, and she knew I would love living at Country Gardens. The deal seemed nice enough.
At first, I thought the apartment was great, though my carpet had faded to an unsightly orange color (to replace, I'd have to pay more). I did have a maintenance issue after living there for about 5 months -- I had a hole in my ceiling from snow building up on the roof. The potholes in the parking lot were also a problem -- I was told that the road belonged to the city and therefore they couldn't do anything about it -- which I didn't believe. Another problem was parking permits for guests. Who'd want to use the parking lot except guests, since the place has a "country" setting' Seemed like an excuse to micro-manage who I had as visitors to the pot-hole lot.
But the biggest problem was dealing with Cathy. I felt she was so nosy -- knocking on my door when I had visitors over to tell me one of my windows in my car was cracked open (purposely, and it was not raining). If I went to see her about apartment business, she would nearly talk my ear off. I moved out to find a place with easier parking and a manager who is concerned about the apartment, but not my personal life. I think Cathy thinks of her tenants as friends, when a professional relationship would suffice. I don't need to hear details about other tenants' love lives, etc.
However, Cathy did try to bend over backwards at every request I made, and was very flexible about my move-out date. She even accepted my security deposit as last month's rent. I guess it depends on what you're looking for in an apartment manager.
