Decent, pleasant place to live near RPI

Troy Gardens is a good place to live if you want to live comfortably with minimal hassles. It's in a pleasant, safe area, and is
generally quiet overall. Most residents are students, retirees, with a few families with young children (which are the main exceptions to the quiet). The property is well maintained, and the staff responds quickly to problems and are very helpful and friendly. Snow gets cleared quickly in winter. If you like, you can ask them to take the carpet out of the apartment leaving you with perfectly pleasant hardwood floors, if you're OK with living on the first floor. My main complaint is that rent increases about $25-$30/month every year, though I guess this is true for other apartment complexes as well. I have quiet neighbors but others have commented to me that noise can seep through walls and floors fairly easily. Heat is plentiful in winter -- too plentiful in fact; I usually shut off the heat in my apt because I get enough warmth from the surrounding units. Neighborhood is generally safe with the exception of some teenagers that loiter in the area sometimes at night -- not sure they have done anything more than minor mischief but they make some residents nervous, partly because the buildings themselves are not locked. Note that they have a restrictive sublease policy -- I think they generally don't allow it anymore.

Compared to other apartment complexes in the area, I'd say Brunswick apartments are the most pleasant, but one of the few high-traffic areas in Troy is Route 7 between Troy and Brunswick and you'd have to deal with that. Troy Gardens is generally considered by most to be a better property than Park Ridge and Cedar Park. Of course you can find much less expensive apartments if you are willing to work with private landlords. But at least with the higher rent at Troy Garden, the staff steps up to take care of all maintenance issues promptly.
