I moved here in the 90s and the local apartment staff, Chuck and Pam I think very highly of. Until recently I always thought this was a great place to live. The new owner of a few years ago, Castle Apartments, has changed my feelings. I also want to mention I have been late with my rent various times but I have been here well over 10 years and I have admitted and paid the late fees.
I was living with substantial water leaks which started in mid summer 2008, I had several buckets and trash cans catching water. Several months later the leaks were stopped but the damage still remains today in the living room and bedroom. I was told Castle Apartments is very tight with paying for repairs. I was advised to call the City of Akron Health Department (330-375-2366) they came out and did an inspection on January, 8th 2009, the inspector issued an order to Castle Apartments to fix it. It now seems to be getting addressed. The inspector said Castle Apartments should provide some compensation for this. Castle Apartments had already said there would be no compensation.
I would have been willing to overlook the previous issues but further annoyance exists because the main office has had my rent wrong for several months, so I am getting charged late fees as a result. The documents I have from Castle Apartments, the local apartment staff (Pam), and myself agree what my monthly rent should be. The main office however believes otherwise. All of my efforts and the efforts by the local apartment staff (Pam) have not resolved the issue. I do not receive calls back from the person who is supposed to be handling this, and I have been told at the office face to face that I would get a phone call. Instead I get mail stating the wrong monthly rent and further build up of late fees.
I also learned the Better Businesses Bureau gives Castle Apartments a F Grade. I will be filing with them shortly. When the Akron Health Department came here they gave me the impression Castle Apartments has a bad reputation. They however were not able to provide details. I am talking with Fair Housing in Akron to see if I can get assistance trying to get the rent amount resolved. This is the first time I have ever filed anything like this, but I feel compelled to because of what I have went through. I would not wish this on anyone, I have received multiple threatening eviction letters and it has taken time that I would have preferred to do other things. Until all this happened I would not have believed the other things people have posted here.
I include pictures of some of the damage that has been here for for seven months. It is rather embarrassing to have to explain this when friends and relatives come over. They feel I am getting taken advantage of. One spot is right over my bed. Picture A shows my rent at 699 which Castle Apartments provided to me when things were renewed, note the beginning and end date. Picture B shows my rent at 705, this document was received on January, 15th 2009. I wanted to include other pictures but this site will only let me do 6. Other reports given to me have crossed off amounts and new ones written in. It also shows being charged $40 on 3-27-08 for a garage in June of 2007.
Note: My star review below of maintenance and staff is for the main office not the local office.

I have had the exact same problem with Castle Mgmt. They waited 10 months to inform me of a yearly rent increase of 10 dollars. Each month was paid on time and automatically from my bank account for the original amount agreed upon. 10 months later, they inform me that I owe them 400 dollars (300 being late fees). Obviously, I did everything I could to work it out with Castle, but in the end, it seemed obvious that they would not back away from their arrogance. I promptly moved after a couple threatening eviction letters. If only they had provided one of those letters stating the $10\month increase within the 10 month period, none of this would have occurred.
Funny thing is that after my first year or so, I saw this site and provided a great review and suggested that the negative comments were from tenants that didn't pay their rent. Wow, was I wrong. I wonder if I can change my rescind that previous statement?
Pam (local office) was awesome, and I had no complaints about the apartment. It was a little difficult to get a hold of the local office at times, but any issues were usually resolved quickly. Pam did all she could to try and help me fix the problems with the main office.
I'm still waiting for the court date to dispute the $2,000 that they are trying to charge me now. I'm very much looking forward to it. I never thought of using the BBB... I'll be happy to take the time to ensure that they stay "F" rated.
