Big For The Price... That's About It

Bayberry is what it is. Generally, you're paying less for more square footage than you'd get in other places because it's so far out of the city. And if finding a lot of room for a low price is your main goal you can't go wrong with Bayberry. The apartments are large, fairly nice, when I moved into my one bedroom they put in new carpet, and the appliances aren't anything super-special, but they're all above-average from my experience. The units are fairly well built so it's not super-expensive to heat or cool your apartment like it can be in some older places. Closet space is also a plus.

Now for the bad, there are a lot of issues that have come up over the past 3 years here that make me not recommend living here. The rent is low so you're living with people from all walks of life. During the first year or so of my stay here it was a common occurrence for the police to be at the complex about once a month (domestic disturbance type stuff, nothing really major). As the sub-prime loan issues have destroyed the housing market there are a lot more young families and single parents who live here now. Plenty of them are fine parents, but there are a handful who let their kids run wild at all hours, constantly running, screaming, being very loud, causing chaos, etc. If you're not the "kids type" this could be an issue.

Noise is a huge factor, especially if you're on a lower floor. The walls are fairly thick, so you don't hear many voices, but it seems that the single mom living above me has nightly races around the living room with her 6 year old and enormous dog. It sounds like the winner celebrates with rounds of cartwheels and jumping jacks. Polite requests have been turned back with inconsiderate responses. The apartment staff has been unable to do anything to quiet the constant wall rattling jumping and running as well.

Bayberry changed management at some point during my stay. When this happened the grounds started to be FAR less cared for. Gone are the dog-waste containers, decently manicured lawn, and the student-aged girls who would clean the hallway areas (and other common areas like the laundry room) once a week. Everything is much more dirty and more of a disgusting mess now, though they did put in new tiles and handrails at entrances to each building. They even took the big blue outgoing mailbox that used to be by the leasing office out for some reason. Also lawn mowing is a major issue in the summers, and it can sometimes go 2 weeks without being cared for. Not ideal.

The staff and maintenance crews are nice enough, but usually give empty promises when asked to solve problems. Emergency maintenance requests are not cared for in an urgent manner. It took them 3 days to solve a slow leak under my bathroom sink. Maintenance crews can sometimes be unresponsive during non-business hours about small issues like not having water, or the bathroom above you flooding, causing a rain of dirty water from above coming through the vents in the ceiling.

Obviously when you live somewhere for 3 years there are going to be issues, so take my review for what you will, but you could probably do better.
