We chose this townhouse because of its location, pool, and general luxury. Of course, for $1300/mo you should expect something nice. Everything was nice while we lived there, except for maintenance requests, which were always ignored. Snow removal was good. Other residents were always nice. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for the staff/management. Don't let appearances fool you, they will treat you great until you have the audacity to leave. Hidden charges, double dipping rent, you name it. When we left, we understood very clearly that we would be receiving a good size check for overpayment. Not only did that never happen, but when we checked our credit report, they had posted a negative item on our history! They are essentially blackmailing us with our credit rating! BEWARE!

I'm an employee at The Residence at Barrington, and this resident had a lease through the end of August, and decided to break their lease and move out in March. The fees they are referring to are the lease breakage fees, which are significantly less than charging through the end of their lease, which most apartment communities would do. We always send a move out statement to every resident that moves out, which would detail any balance owed. If this balance is not paid, it is sent to collections. These things are all standard procedure for any legitimate apartment community, and are detailed in our lease, which is a legally binding contract. If a resident fulfills this contract as promised, then these charges will not apply. Nothing is hidden, and it is all spelled out in the lease.

As you can see, they obviously care about their image. Not enough to mention the all the facts, of course. What was left out is that we asked for a summary of charges for leaving early. They summarized it minus one important thing THAT IS NOT ON THE LEASE, the $100/month discount on the rent had to be refunded not only for the months we were there, but the partial and penalty month as well. That comes to $800 we "owe" that is NOT ON THE LEASE, but in fine print on a separate amendment. This was NOT mentioned when we asked what the exact final charges would be. Just plain greed and tricks. You shouldn't need a lawyer to rent.

It's never good to break a lease. Maybe you should have asked for a shorter lease. Usually apartments offer month to month for a higher rent.
