Kiss your security deposit goodbye!

We lived here for a year. I have two kids and my husband as well as two cats and a ferret. The apartment was nice as were my neighbors. However, my Jeep was broken into by a bunch of kids in the parking lot and trashed. I accidentally locked myself out of the apartment and had to call a locksmith because maintenance could not be reached by the emergency number (big dummy had his phone off!). That same night there was a fire and the fire department had to kick in the door because, again, the maintenance guy had his phone off!

A month before we were moving out, I asked the owner (they had just fired Trudy) about cleaning and what he expected out of us. He said he wouldn't keep our deposit for silly reasons because his business is based on word of mouth, blah, blah, blah. He also told me to concentrate on the kitchen and the bathroom and don't clean the carpet because it costs him more for the carpet cleaners to get out the cleaning solvents residents use. So, I didn't clean the carpet and they kept my deposit. I had to fight tooth and nail to get back what I did, but after being told that I wouldn't have to do that, I was quite ticked. I've always had my security deposits returned!

Needless to say, this complex seems to be going downhill and fast. Right before we moved out (April, 2006) all of the maintenance guys had party plates (DUI). That should give you a hint about the staff.

I am currently in a similar situation re: security deposit. I do not live at this property, but at another property in the area managed by the same company (Niederst Management). I am being charged $190 for damages made to the apartment I recently moved out of (only lived there from 12/08 to 04/09). Some of the damages fees are legitimate (fridge wasn't cleaned out, kitchen sink not cleaned, etc.) but others, particularly $50 I am being charged for carpet stains - are completely fraudulent! The stains were there before I moved in. I have photos and documentation. The management is avoiding me and more or less refusing to speak to me about these fraudulent fees. I'm glad to hear you got at least part of your security deposit back. Wish me luck on getting mine returned. I will take it all the way to the top of the company and file a complaint with BBB if I have to. I hope you have found a nicer place to live since writing this review, somewhere that you are treated with honesty and respect, and I am certain it is not a Neiderst Management property!

Yes, we have found a very nice place and have been here for 3 years. If you continue to have problems with Niedrest, I suggest taking them to small claims court. I wish I would have. I learned from them to take pictures and document any damage. Our new apartment is brand new and we are the first tenants, so it's not that big of deal here. I wish I would have taken Niederst to court, though. Now I know how they can afford their fleet of H2's.
