In 2005 I knew a friend who lived in Lakes of Brice Apartments. I visited my friend frequently and I was very impressed by how spacious the apartments were for the price. Fast forward to 2007...that's when I decided to move into Lakes of Brice, a decision that I now regret.

After putting in a maintenance request, and asking that the repairs be made ONLY when I was present I was surprised to come home to two of maintenance men in my apartment. Although the problem was fixed, the men still looked startled when I came through the door. One of the maintenance men was coming from the back of the apartment although the problem was in the kitchen. Long story short a week later my apartment was broken into and all of my electronics and other valuables were stolen. When I called the leasing office suspecting foul play, they brushed me off. A month later we got a new leasing and maintenance staff.

One morning I literally walked outside and every other car in the lot had been a target of a smash and grab. Me and another neighbor had to knock on everyone's door to inform them that there car had been vandalized. It was a very sad day.

The vent system in the apartments is terrible for people with asthma or allergies. The maintenance team changes the filters every year, but when I pulled out a dirty filter it displayed in writing "Change every 2 months." I opened my living room window about 3 inches to allow a constant flow of fresh air. I went to Wal-Mart to get some cleaning supplies and when I got back the screen was ripped off the window and someone climbed into my apartment and robbed me for the second time. Again I called the police who were very helpful and sympathetic. But when I called the leasing office they gave me the cold-shoulder and responded "Well, it's nothing we can do about that, I hope you had renter's insurance."

People are constantly being evicted, so the dumpsters are always overflowing. The grounds, however, are well kept in the summer and the fall. But in the winter, BYO salt and shovel because walkways are never cleared. People park any and everywhere, so they driving paths are always really tight.

The lights outside of the individual apartments are always getting smashed by vandals. It happened so often to me that I kept a stock of light bulbs just so I would not have to use my cell phone light while I unlocked my door.

If you're concerned about your safety, don't move here. But, if you choose to move in, here are a few things you will need:

1. Renter's insurance

2. A Tazer or pepper spray if you're a female (I can't tell you how many times I've been harassed by guys there when I was walking from or to my car. I was literally like walking past a construction site).

3. A car garage or a car alarm system

4. An air purifier

5. An attorney

6. The ability to drive through tight spaces.

7. Shovel and salt for the winter

8. A gym membership. (Unfortunately, most of the equipment in the exercise room is either broken or really, really old).

This is an honest review. The LOB website will tell you all the good things about the apartment but I'm telling you things that you will not find printed in the brochure. Ask for all the crime and rape stats for this apartment. They are obligated to provide you with this info. If they don't, the police department will have the info available. *Oh, and by the way here's yet another adventure that happened in Lakes of Brice. I came home and there were SWAT cars and vans blocking the driving path to my apartment. There was a hostage situation taking place. A man with a gun took his girlfriend hostage and barricaded himself in his town home and refused to leave. After a few shots, he surrendered. And yes this happened in Lakes of Brice this year.
