Know What You're Getting Into

I'm writing this in hopes that others will not have to go through the same ordeal as my boyfriend and me.

When we found Aspen Village we were looking to move to Cincinnati from a small city a few states away. At the time we were virtually clueless when it came to Cincinnati neighborhoods, and in order to find a safe neighborhood (which we were very concerned about), we consulted both family and realtors that lived in the area. They suggested we look for something located in Delhi and were adamant that we avoid both Price Hill and Westwood.

That's when I found this: http://www.move.com/apartments_ohio/delhi.aspx

The pictures looked promising, the price was great, and according to the map it was close to where I d be attending school. It was also listed as being within Delhi. Just to make sure the people we talked to were knowledgeable I quickly checked out the crime stats for Delhi (which is the neighborhood Aspen Village was listed in, as well as where it was located according to the map on the website), and decided it looked pretty good. We made an appointment that day to visit the complex during an upcoming trip.

We made our visit during an afternoon and talked to one of the staff members. We asked her a million questions about safety, whether we would be racially accepted, and told her that we had found the complex on Move.com. She said the complex was VERY safe, they had never had ANY racially charged incidences, and that Move.com was EXTREMELY accurate in the description of their facilities. Needless to say we ended up signing the lease and moved in during December.

We quickly learned that we had been blatantly lied to. I admit that we were naive and accept the blame for many of the issues that we ran into, but I also believe the Aspen Village staff was extremely negligent and intentionally misleading in the description of their complex and should be help accountable as such.

Our list of Issues with Aspen Village:
1. We were lied to about the complex being within Delhi when it is actually located in Westwood.
2. The bug problem was terrible. We had roaches and other bugs in our apartment from day one. Neither my boyfriend or I had ever had bug problems in our previous apartments and now that we have moved no longer experience this issue.
3. Although most everyone was genuinely nice and accepting of us, there were a FEW tenants who hated the fact that we were different and called us racially charged names/threatened us on a number of occasions.
4. The complex is nowhere near safe. During our four month occupancy my car window was smashed in, we were threatened by the FEW unaccepting neighbors, there was a drive by shooting right up the road from us, there were young teens/kids out roaming around and being loud at all hours of the night, our neighbor's car was stolen, someone threw a bottle at my boyfriend's car and almost hit us, our downstairs neighbor's apartment was broken into, we received notes from the STAFF that there were catalytic converter thefts occurring across the property and we should be aware (though they made no mention of any plan of action that they would be taking), and there was some guy that randomly walked through the parking lot at night with a baseball bat (for the record Aspen Village does not have their own baseball team...).

Most of this happened within the month of April as the weather started to get warmer and people were hanging around outside, and eventually we had enough. When I went to the office with my grievances and demanded to be let out of our lease because we didn't feel safe in our OWN home, the office manager told me that we should have done a better job checking out the neighborhood and that stuff like this "-happen(s) everywhere in Cincinnati". I told her that we HAD checked out the crime stats, for DELHI, which is the neighborhood they were listed under. She then told me that the misleading information was the responsibility of Move.com and not apartment management. She also made the claim that some people consider Westwood and Delhi to be interchangeable, so technically the staff member we signed the lease with did not lie to us. However, we did end up getting out of our lease, which leads me to believe that the manager knew very well that her staff had been negligent in their practices.

Please, if you are looking to rent at Aspen Village know/do the following:
1. No matter what they tell you, the complex IS located in Westwood. If you are not from Cincinnati/don't know much about the neighborhood FIND OUT, and really think about whether you will feel comfortable there.
2. Most of the tenants are decent, but there are people who may not be accepting and will take their dislike to a violent level. When we made the apartment management aware of the situation they wrote it off as normal and made no attempt to improve the situation.
3. There is a major bug problem; everyone I met at the complex had an issue with roaches. Some even had mice and rats.
4. Before signing the lease drive through the complex at night when most of the tenants are home from work and school. There is a major difference between what the complex is like during the day and what it is like at night.

If my boyfriend and I had known/done all of these things we definitely would not have moved in. And let me tell you, now that we are less naive we have found a great new apartment and have learned that what we experienced at Aspen Village does not "-happen everywhere in Cincinnati".

High Five. This is exactly what happened to us. We could have written this review. I am trying to get out of my lease now.
