Good and Bad Experiences - Would Recommend

I first lived in a 1 bed/1 bath, then upgraded to a 2 bed/2 bath in the middle of my lease. The 1 bed was a wonderful apartment. It was clean, kept in good repair, I had quiet neighbors, and all appliances worked well so I never had to request maintenance. The 2 bed was a completely different story, though. I signed the lease before seeing the actual apartment, which was a HUGE mistake. The previous tenants did not like letting prospectives in, so I was shown an immaculate alternative on a different floor.

Skip to the end of the review unless you want to read my venting... some of the problems encountered in the 2 bed:
- Original single-paned windows, which had huge gaps around the edges and horrible drafts, even after they applied a sealant around the edges for the winter. The windows in the 1 bed were new, double paned, and sealed very well. If you look at an apartment, make sure to get one with new windows.
- The apartment was in horrible condition when I moved in... carpet was black along the edges, dog hair EVERYWHERE, and smelled like vomit in some places. They did re-clean the carpet after I asked them too, however it didn't help very much. The 1 bed was very clean, though, so I guess it depends on the previous tenants.
- It was in this apartment that I discovered they do not have a very good maintenance staff. After three visits, they still failed to fix my broken heat pump when I finally gave up trying. Only the emergency heating coils worked, which resulted in some very high electric bills and the fan running non-stop in the winter. They also failed to (successfully) fix the items noted in the move-in checklist, even after follow-up notifications.
- There are poor seals in the walls between some of the apartments. One or more of my neighbors in the 2 bed smoked in their apartment, and when they did, it smelled like they were smoking in my apartment. The staff recommended that I purchase a special filter to clean the air in my apartment. So I purchased furnace filters with activated carbon, which helped a little, but only if the furnace was running (which was 100% of the time in the winter).
- Very, very thin walls in the 2 bed. My next door neighbors liked to have sex at 3:30 AM on weekdays. The first time they woke me up I thought they were in my room! You can also hear pretty much every conversation. Not sure why it wasn't a problem in the 1 bed... I guess they insulated different walls differently or I had very quiet neighbors then.
- The only things I liked about the larger 2 bed were the large bathtub in the master, the washer/dryer in the unit, and the huge amount of light let in through the 10 massive windows.

Overall it is a nice place to live in a unique, historic building. The staff are generally pretty nice, and it is very enjoyable assuming you don't need the maintenance staff to fix anything. They have an above average gym that I didn't use as often as I would have liked. With the security controls in the building and the more expensive garage, I felt pretty safe. I would live here again in my 1 bed apartment, but definitely not the 2 bed.

One last word of advice - If you get trapped in the elevator, don't panic. Just hit a button to go to a different floor where it will then let you out :)
