Stuck in my lease

I have lived here for 2 1/2 years and I attempted to get out of my lease after the 2nd year, but it apparently automatically renewed itself. My family is close and I don't stay in the apt that much, but I think it is because I don't really like it. Doors are frequently propped open. The underground parking is scary when the lights are out. The overall area feels safe and it is close to the Cedar/Fairmont shopping area.

I lived there a few years ago and agree. I tried to get out of my lease and then finally left. I wound up in small claims court with a case against BV. The landlord bought an attorney and I lost. Read your lease carefully. If it specifies a 1 year contract, you can leave if you never signed to renew, but as I recall, I was notified of a renewal time period by email. I think it said that if I didn't notify management that you are leaving, the lease would be renewed. This may be your problem.

I lived there 5 years ago and ran into the same problem where my lease automatically renewed. I sent a letter but then the landlord lied and said he never got it. We eventually found the card with his signature saying he did get it but before then we found a friend to take over the lease. As far as I knew, it is now illegal in Ohio to do automatic renewals? This may not be exactly right, but look into it. Also, when I was there I think we had to give a 90 day written notice we weren't renewing, but I think the Ohio law may not be less days. Good luck. That guys is a douche and a half.
