Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2008
I have been living at Hyacinth since April 2006, almost two years now. The apartment is great. Great floors and windows, tons of space. Really dig the industrial look with exsposed brick, ventilation, etc. The staff is great and quite prompt with issues. Our toilet shattered due to a "slip and crash fall" and it was replaced the next day. There is adequate parking in the gated lot. Sometimes it can be tight if residents have overnight guests. Because of the old brick construction, the apartment is very temperature controlled. During the winter, the electric bill is quite low because it maintains a good temperature and lots of light through the windows. Sometimes so much that we crack open a window as it can get warm. In the summer it can get warm so the AC electric kicks in, but maintains a cool temperature without running all the time. Ceiling fans in bedrooms and living area a very solid and quiet. Also, because of the brick, we rarely hear our neighbors. Being right across from the elevator, if you are by the door and are listening for it, you can hear people in the hall. I am a pretty light sleeper and have never been woken up by neighbor or hall noise. The halls can be echoey because of the concrete floors and blank walls. Sometimes if our neighbor has some music going you can hear it being that his stereo is against our shared wall. But, as mentioned in other reviews, IT IS AN APARTMENT COMPLEX!! This is part of sharing walls, if you cant handle it, then find a house of your own. Its just common sense. There has been mention of the bad neighborhood. Yes, the neighborhood is a little sketchy. It is in a rather industrial part of the outskirts of the downtown area. But if anyone looking for a new apartment doesnt drive around the area they are planning on moving is a little misguided. One drive around the couple blocks would show you old, broken houses, lots of "kids" walking around, some bars on some windows, etc. This is something that would be picked up on very quickly and would lend to your decision making process. If you are someone that likes to jog outside in the dark before or after work, I would probably advise against it. The gate and front door are secured access only. There have been new security cameras put in the parking lot and interior corridors. I have never seen strange people wondering the halls, nor have I seen pimps and hoes hanging around outside the front door. As a "non-artist", I resent some of the other reviews speaking toward "getting along with non-artists". Maybe its those same holier-than-thou, pretentious, snobbish psuedo-bohemian attitudes that make your neighbors not like you and should take you somewhere else. My roomate is a painter and does work in several theatres in the area. Our neighbors own their own film production company and work from home. There are other, "non-artists" like myself as well, including lawyers and medical professionals. Sometimes the laundry room can get crowded with only 5 washers and 5 dryers for the 50 unit complex. But the dollar bill to quarter changer is nice for making the change. The community room is a great perk and can be reserved for free and is great for parties, big or small. The fitness area has a treadmill, stationary bike, eliptical trainer, free weights, many dumbells, two multi-station rigs, and a pingpong table too. If you need more, then quit being a cheapskate and buy a gym membership. Whenever friends come over, they are always impressed with the building. I like it a lot and have enjoyed being there.
