As always you get what you pay for

I will preface my complaints by saying that some of the problems I've had at this residence have more to do with the area it is in than the owners. It is true that north campus is safer and more quiet than central and south campus, but it is still an urban setting. My moped (which was chained up) was stolen from the parking lot. A few months later someone disassembled the bike rack and stole my bike. More than twice I have had to alert North Steppe or police to the problem of homeless people getting inside and sleeping in the halls and under the stairs. That is creepy when I'm coming home from work at 5 or 6 am. Also frustrating from a safety and convenience perspective, they changed the lock on the back door of 42, the building I live in, because it was troublesome--and now no one can enter through the back, where the parking lot is!
The sloped walkway behind the building to the dumpster never got salted in all the snow and ice we had recently and I nearly broke my neck a few times trying to take trash out, yet North Steppe posts memos about how all tenants will be charged a fee if trash is disposed of on other parts of the property.
Onto the the interior, they are small places and admittedly cheap. As another reviewer said they are more like studios in terms of space. The bedroom does not have a heat register, so in the winter that room is quite cold especially with the door shut and the summer, very hot. I have moved my bed to the living room. It's even worse though during the winter because the bathroom is connected to the bedroom and gets even less heat. That, combined with the fact that the shower water often comes out room temperature at best, makes for a very uncomfortable experience in the winter. There are no outlets in the bathrooms which is a pain.
In my first several months here I complained of mold growing on my walls which took forever to get corrected.
I haven't asked but it seems that the air conditioning and heat are controlled, in that you have to wait until the end of June for cold air to come out. I bought a window AC unit to supplement in that time because it was unbearable. Unfortunately the windows open side to side and there was no way to install it without it falling out. I'm on the third floor.
There are three washers and three dryers in 50. Each time I put my quarters in it's a gamble, I have no idea which machine will eat my money on any given day.
The employees have been inconsiderate to me as well. I have mentioned that I prefer my unit not be shown. I understand that they need to show it from time to time but I would like to be a part of the decision as to when, not just get a voicemail to tell me they WILL be coming. I have tried to call back to tell them it was not a good time, to which they did not respond. I sleep during the day because of my job and have explained this but they do not listen. Then when they knock on my door anyway, and I tell them I said it was not a good day for me, I see through the peephole that the employee is rolling his eyes at me. Rude!
I saw on a real estate site that North Steppe is selling these buildings. I wouldn't want them! I can't wait until my lease is up. Spend the extra money on something better.
