Before my roommate and I moved into RWT, we toured a few of the available apartments. They were all quite similar (nothing special about them, but not in horrible condition.) Each apartment is owned by individuals, but many of them are managed by Sterling Property Management. My personal experiences with SPM aren't the greatest. When my roommate and I arrived on move-in day, our apartment had not been cleaned... AT ALL!! The carpet had lots of stains and is very worn. There was wax on the walls and carpets as if someone had knocked over a burning candle and sprayed wax all over the place; there were unidentifiable liquids that had been spilled in the inside of the refridgerator; the magnetic strip around the refridgerator door was broken (ie. we can see the inside!!); there is mold growing in the bathroom (in the shower, on the ceiling, and on the walls)... there's even mold growing on the main door frame. Everything is outdated and both of our toilets (we have 1.5 baths) have broken on several occasions. To top it all off, recently our shower has been acting up.
The day we moved in, we complained about the state and cleanliness (or uncleanliness) of the apartment. They did send up a lady who cleaned the kitchen (but that was all). They also sent up a guy to steam clean the carpet when we complained about the stains on the carpet that same day. The cleaning had no effect. After we realized the carpet wouldn't get better, we requested to have it replaced. (I understand that carpet is expensive, and difficult to request from the owners) so we let that one go... we could deal with it. The refrigerator was another story. Obviously we don't want our food to go bad even quicker, so we talked to David (Property Manager). He promised us that he'd check into it. Little did we know we would have to make several complaints about the fridge for someone to finally come look at it. My roommate passed one of the maintenance guys (Who are extremely nice!!) and he came up immediatly to take a look. After a few weeks, we checked in with David. He claimed the part had been ordered, but it wasn't the correct part. Here we are, about 11 months after the initial complaints, and nothing's been successfully and fully accomplished.
I have seen into other apartments in the building and some have hardwood or laminate flooring (atleast in the kitchen). I recommend looking into an individually managed apartment. My roommates dad owns a few (they are 1 bedroom's and we needed 2), so we passed. However, I wish we would've looked into a different management. Her dad lives 2 hours away, but comes into Columbus often to check in with his tenants. He's also here alot during the summer to PERSONALLY clean the apartments!
The office staff in the lobby is great! Marla is VERY friendly and answers any questions you have. We were having problems connecting to the free internet. (I understand that it's free and won't be the greatest, but I would expect atleast a minimal connectivity.) She helped us out and now our connection is GREAT and we still don't have to pay for an upgraded connection!
The location is great and my room had a GREAT view! However, if you live on the Lane Ave. side... football season will be EXTREMELY LOUD!!! Concerts are held in the parking lot and have the ability to wake you up quite early. It's nice that (atleast our apartment) came with a dishwasher and garbage disposal in the sink. GREAT ammenities.
Weigh the pro's and con's before you make your decision. If you look at an apartment and think it'll be great with a couple of adjustments, get something signed by your management. When you move in, take pictures... I have a neighbor, who had a visit from the guy who lived there before him. The kid was being fined for damages he claimed he didn't cause... the people before him did.
P.S. I think there may be an issue with the electricity. We were paying close to $80 in the winter (and we RARELY turned on the heat). We were trying to save money and reduce our bills, but it was still high. Our parents finally convinced us to turn on the heat so we wouldn't get sick. My roommates sister lives in a two-story townhouse and her electricity bill is drastically lower than our tiny two-bedroom apartment.
The post about residents needing to grow up and learn to live without Mommy and Daddy was uncalled for. Yes, while I lived at home, when something was broken, we could call and get someone to take a look at it the very next day, but when a refridgerator is broken, and storing certain foods (meats, dairies, and such- that if they turn bad due to irregular storing temps) can cause you sick, that's a problem! It shouldn't take a YEAR to fix problems like this! We decided to not renew our lease and move! Recommend that SPM gets someone a little more sociable and organized.
