We should've listened

My boyfriend and I decided to start looking for apartments back in February just so we could be sure that we found the perfect place. A member of the old staff (who was overly nice and managed to say all of the right things like "3 weeks free" and "special discount if you put down a deposit this week") convinced us to rush into putting down a $200 deposit and $40 for an application fee. We thought that the one-bedroom loft would be the perfect size, considering it had the extra "storage space" attached to the bathroom along with the bedroom and extra loft space. We were told at the time that the extra space could even be turned into an office or a small bedroom (Stephanie, the girl showing us the unit went on and on about the benefit of the extra room). A few days later, we brought my mother and sister in to get their opinion and the people in the office again urged us to put down a deposit right away as they have a "waiting list" for such units.
Well, we fell for it. It is now July, we were supposed to move in June 30th but when we arrived at the apartment (which we had not seen before signing the lease....our stupid fault for actually trusting someone in the real estate business) and began carrying up our stuff, we realized that the entire "storage room" was non-existant. When we went to the office, the girl at the desk pretended to have no idea what we were talking about "huh' what extra room' I've never seen on" We then explained the situation to another girl in the office who was also dumb-founded and it wasn't until a maintenance man entered the office and heard us talking and said "yeah, those extra storage rooms in the one-bedroom lofts are really nice" that we had some recignition that we were not actually crazy.
We asked to talk to manager and were told that she was out of town on vacation and would not be back until the 5th (this was on the 30th). We were offered a 2 bedroom garden for more rent than we were already paying and we were offered a dirty maintenance garage to keep our extra furniture in. When we told them that neither of those options were actually helpful to us in any way and that we would not accept, they became a little less pleasant. The manager (who had no problem talking to the office girl) had a message relayed to us that, basically, we had signed the lease...too bad. She said she would get back to us on the 5th and would not be bothered by us anymore.
We now feel that we've been conned. They showed us a really nice apartment, moved us into a sh*^ hole with an entire missing room (not to mention the rust stains on the carpet and drawers that were falling apart). Then they wrote us off and are insisting that we will have to pay for an entire year's rent for an apartment that we have never occupied (nor will we ever...we returned the keys right away). Needless to say, this will be going to court if they do not change their position on the matter very soon.
Let our mistakes and trust in seemingly good people serve as a lesson to anyone thinking about moving here. They are nice as can be when they are trying to get you in there and as soon as the lease is signed, you mean nothing more to them than the money you pay them every month.

Typical Sterling Place! Unprofessional and uncaring people in the leasing office. Rent is overpriced. There is only one trash compactor in the whole complex and it's overflowing on the weekends. It's very disgusting. I live here now and my lease is up soon. I can't wait to get out of here! Be careful with this apartment. Whenever I drop off my rent check, I see someone new in the office. They don't know what they're talking about, let alone what the previous employees were talking about. If you have to live here, make sure that all promises are in writing. Btw, there are a lot of other apartments in the area with more competent people. |

I posted on here a while back and it's sheer entertainment now to check back as I am trying to review other apartments to move into. When my potential new apartment leasers ask why I am moving, I clearly state to them that Sterling Place and the Connor Group have their heads up their @$$3$ and I won't be sad to leave before my lease is up.
