If you are visiting one of these apartments for a party, they are highly recommended becuase there seems to be no rules on parties/ noise or behavior here.
If you want to live here, then you better think twice, especially if you have small children or care about your own safety. There is lead-paint on all the units and probably at least 20 layers of paint--no exaggeration--on all the walls. If you look at the side the paint is 1/4" thick or more and is constantly chipping off and floating around in the air for you to breath.
The staff and maintence personell are very unhelpful, except when trying to con you into renting here, otherwise they simply do not do their jobs.
Parking is bad and on the street, with frequent vandalism and break-ins reported. The manager--he drives around in a Van Buren Jeep--even helped push this guys car out of the snow after hitting my car and didn't even call the police or get his information.
My apartment had a gas leak, and I had to call DP&L for help--who said the stove and hook-up was dangerous, as the maintence person said "that is just how gas stoves work." After this the management angrily contacted me and said not to call outside, but let maintence fix it. After DP&L said the stove could not be reconnected until a new one was installed, Van Buren's answer was to just come out and look at the old one and then turn it back on. A few days later the gas leak exploded almost burning the apartment down as fire shot out of the broken stove like a flamethrower. I called 911 to which 3 fire trucks responded. I asked why so many and the fireman said "when we get a call from van buren we bring everyone, this place is a death trap." Suffice to say, I moved out after this expereince and would not move back in no matter how cheap the apartments are. TYou get what you pay for and Van Buren is a prime example of this. x-2PE3sjUIIeetAHoKOk

I completely and totally agree. I could really see this happening here. My smoke detector goes off EVERY TIME I turn on my oven. It's scary.

Yeah, I lived there two years at 1511 Tabor in 2004-2006. My cars were broken into twice, the stove always smelled like a gas leak. Thick paint, etc etc. I basically did my own maintenance, painting, fixing stuff. Given that it was a "townhome" style apartment, I had two floors to myself. But the walls are thin, even with all that paint!
