Poor... but a nice location

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
When we were transferred to Columbus last year, we had very little time to find an apartment.
Britton Woods seems like the best choice, it was an excellent location, seemed fairly clean, and we got a great two bedroom with a loft for a reasonable price (compared to other Dublin apartments).
The staff was courteous and helpful.
Unfortunately, our apartment was still occupied when we visited Columbus, so we weren't able to see it until the move in day.
From the moment we signed the lease, things have gone downhill.
On move in day, the carpeting in our apartment was wet.
They must have just cleaned it that morning - and it wasn't even clean! There are stains throughout the apartment and one of our bedrooms has the lingering stench of cat urine.
Bedrooms:
When we moved in, the nails on one of the walls were sticking out about 1/4 inch.
They were covered with a fresh coat of paint.
Otherwise, the bedrooms are average sized.
There are large closets with shelving in each bedroom.
Bathrooms:
Both bathrooms were dirty at move in.
The bathtubs and linoleum are stained.
Also, the previous tenants left some kind of sticky substance (tape residue') all over the cabinets that no amount of chemicals or scrubbing will clean off.
This is quite disgusting because hair and dust stick to it.
Kitchen:
The original washer, dryer, and dish washer are very old.
The washer didn't work at all when we moved in, and after a few weeks, maintenance brought a new one.
They scratched the already scuffed linoleum.
Hopefully they noted that I called about this and I won't have to argue with them when I move out.
Both the stove and refrigerator are fairly new and in good working condition, but were filthy when we moved in.
The countertop is stained and also has several large cracks, scratches, and pits.
The faucet sprays water everywhere at any pressure more than 50%.
Loft:
The loft has functioned nicely as a small "TV Room" and home office.
It has two good sized closets.
Porch:
The porch is decent sized, and was somehow covered heavily in mud when we moved in.
Odd for a third floor apartment.
Our screen door is basically non-functional as it falls off the track at every attempt to open or close it.
Maintenance has been by several times to fix it, but they finally admitted that it was not fixable.
We were told that they couldn't get us a new door, but management may be replacing all screen doors at some point.
That was 10 months ago.
Maintenance:
The maintenance staff has been ok.
There was a bit of confusion about something that they thought was fixed, but wasn't, but otherwise there is usually not a long delay in them getting out.
Soon after we first moved in, a $20 bill went missing on a day that a maintenance man was in the apartment alone.
We cannot say for sure that it was stolen, but neither of us remembers spending it.
Shortly thereafter, the person in question left the company.
Since then, we have insisted that someone be home when they come in the apartment.
This has not been an issue, but I have the flexibility to work from home on occasion with my job.
They would call my cell phone when they were ready to head over, and I would head home from the office.
One of the maintenance guys even stopped by and helped me install our electronic thermostat.
Grounds:
The outside hallways have not been cleaned in the year we have lived here.
They walls are covered in dirt which will get on your clothes if you aren't careful when you walk up the stairs.
A quick once-over with a power washer once a year would solve the problem easily.
The hallways could stand to be swept.
The grounds are quite nice.
There are always nice flowers and the grass rarely gets too high.
The areas around the ponds are disgusting.
There are ducks (and their droppings) everywhere.
Utilities:
Our average water bill is around $50 per month.
This seems high to me for two people, but perhaps it is average for Columbus.
The heat is gas and the average throughout the winter months was $100-$130.
We generally keep the thermostat around 68.
The walls are very thin.
We found this out when we got rid of our headboard before we purchased a new one.
Our bed is on an outside wall, and with no headboard our pillows would be freezing when we got into bed at night.
You can feel a good deal of cold air coming in through the windows and doors.
The average gas bill in the summer months was about $40.
Our electric bill averaged $60 in the summer.
We run the air conditioning most of the summer and keep the temperature about 72.
In the winter, the average bill was $45.
We have recently started building a house.
Unfortunately, it wont be done before the end of our lease.
We have been told that a limited number of short-term leases are available, and they have all been used.
We have decided to move rather than pay the $150 per month fee for 6-8 months.
In the end, it wasnt a horrible place to live, and with the short time we had to find an apartment, Im sure we could have done worse, but I would not recommend living here.
I understand that some of the apartments have been upgraded with new appliances, cabinets, carpeting, and wooden flooring.
I have not seen a finished apartment, but one of the apartments in my building was being worked on.
A company dropped off all the supplies one afternoon and they sat outside in the grass during a heavy but short rainstorm for at least two days.
