Becoming Friends with the Police

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2004
As a recent robbery victim at this apartment, I feel I have something very worthwhile to contribute.
Let me start by saying we have lived in Lakeview Square since July of this year. At first I liked the apartment. It is quite spacious and reasonably priced (that is if you chose the apartment with no "updates" and carpeting from 1980.) It was not until recently that we learned of the many, many problems and crimes that occur here.
First, after we turned in our initial maintenance requests, a month had passed and NONE of our problems had been addressed. We called several times, to no avail. When our plumbing backed up and flooded the apartment, we even called the emergency maintenance. There was no answer for over an hour. I never did get through. We had to go to the rental office in person, which is never easy or enjoyable, just to get the things that were wrong when we moved in fixed. We did get a maintenance person 3 days later. We still had a problem with this because the worker let a pet out of our home.
Secondly, during most of the summer we were unable to keep our bedroom windows open, due to continuous noise, which increased our electric bill (we had to run the AC to drown out the noise). Now that it is getting colder, I expect we will run into similarly unduly high bills because I do not think there is much insulation. We ALWAYS hear the neighbors through the thin walls. The floor upstairs sounds like it is going to cave in every time we run the washer. The parking lot and common areas are not well lit and are constantly littered with trash and other waste. Landscape seems to only be well maintained near the rental office. Speaking of the office, the staff was very friendly when we first were looking, but all subsequent visits to the office were greeted by blank stares. The staff acts as if they do not know who we were. Oh and how could I forget the bugs! Just about every morning I am greeted by a silverfish or two on the wall. Maybe I could deal with all of this, but then came the final straw.
Finally, two weeks ago we were the victims of a robbery. We were upstairs sleeping, and did not hear a sound. Apparently it is quite easy for the seasoned burglars to open the garage doors and help themselves to your belongings. The police told us that there have been a lot of problems in the area, and reading this website, I have learned they were even worse than I knew. A burglar was shot and killed, but the robberies continue.
After we were robbed we went to the rental office to speak with the property manager. We asked if they could send out a memo informing the other residents of the frequent break-ins that have been occurring. We were told that this would not happen. Two weeks have passed and we still have not heard a thing.
Management does not feel it is important to tell you about these occurrences, but I do. I have lost my patience with the way that things are done, and I no longer can keep quiet. I also have no qualms about putting my name on this, because I know every word I said is true, and I will be happy to address and elaborate for anyone who has concerns.
Something needs to be done before someone else gets hurt... or worse.
