Never Again...

My fiance and I had about a week to move, and I found this place on the internet. I did the application via fax, and had everything in order. When I confirmed the move-in date with the leasing agent, she informed me that she would be out of town and nobody would be able to be there, so she would just tape the lease and the key to our front door. I should've known then that this was a very unprofessional establishment, but figured that we were moving on very short notice, and left it at that.
The night we moved in the cops were there looking for underagers drinking, and there were residents lined up in the lawn in front of the buildings with coolers full of beer drinking and smoking and screaming.
When we got into the apartment, it was not at all what we had expected. When I spoke to the leasing agent, I had told her that we wanted a first floor unit. It turned out to be in the basement. Perhaps I should've asked more probing questions, but I feel that I should've been informed of this. Our windows had no screens in them and we have two cats, so we were unable to open the windows. On top of that, people would constantly walk by, looking into the windows, so we had to keep our curtains drawn all the time. We ended up feeling like we were living in a giant cave.
There was a two inch gap under our front door, and being so close to the river, there were constantly bugs coming in under the gap from the common hallway. I spoke to the office about it several times and after three months, they put weather stripping on the door.
There were constantly cops at the property. One night there was a big fight outside our living room window. At first, people were screaming at eachother and then it would die down again. This went on for three hours. At around 1:30 in the morning the started fighting again, and it ended up being a huge brawl. We called the police and went outside to wait for them. When they got there, two people ran up to us, told us not to tell the police where they were because they had warrants out for their arrest and ran into our building. They ended up being found with drugs on them and were arrested.
At one point I realized I was not getting mail. After further examination, I realized that someone was popping open the top of the mailboxes. Again, I went to the office about this, but they said there was nothing they could do about it. Not until I threatend to go to the post master did they fix it.
After about six months living there, we noticed holes in our external walls. We called the office and they informed us that they were having a termite problem. They had their maintenance guy come spray and set stakes in the ground. When he was done, he said, "That should slow them down." Maybe it's just me, but I feel like something like that should have been dealt with by an actual exterminator. It did slow them down, but by spring they were back again. It got so bad that there were holes the size of baseballs in our walls.
When we moved out, we got none of our deposit back, which was a $750 security deposit and a $200 pet deposit. The place was actually cleaner when we moved out than when we moved in. I would've fought them on it, but I was just so glad to be out of there.
I know it sounds like I'm just a big complainer, but I now actually work at an apartment complex as a leasing agent, and now that I know more of the ins and outs of the business, it makes this whole situation even more disturbing. I just don't want anyone else to have to go through what I went through.
