I spent one year living at Sunrise. It was the cheapest deal I could find on a two-bedroom apartment in Kent, and I figured it couldn't be that bad. And while I've certainly seen worse living arrangements, I would never recommend renting here.

First off, there's no air conditioning. I knew this prior to moving in, but I didn't realize just how horrible it would be. The brick buildings get HOT in the summer, and since there's only windows on one side, there's really no way to get a breeze going. You could install a window unit, but the sideways-sliding windows made this difficult.

Gas bills were another problem. Not only did the poor insulation result in high gas bills in the winter, but the furnace was ancient, and the filter wasn't even installed correctly. I also appeared to have a gas leak, since I was somehow getting $60 gas bills in June.

I also had a big problem with tiny ants swarming all over my living room. The manager would have someone come and spray if I complained, but I really don't think it should have been a reoccurring problem to begin with.

Finally, they're complete jerks about returning the security deposit. Somehow, I was charged $100 for "not vacuuming." Not only was this untrue, but a $100 charge for failing to vacuum seems more than a little ridiculous. When I called to discuss the matter, I was told that I'd have to pursue legal action.

Overall, I'd discourage anyone from renting from Sunrise. It won't be the worst experience of your life, but it's not worth the "savings" in rent to live there. Tiny kitchens, bad paint jobs, disgusting laundry room...the list could go on and on. Just spare yourself the hassle, rent elsewhere.
