Great place to live, a little expensive though

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2005

We moved here from Pennsylvania three years ago. This apartment complex is great.

Location is great, Dayton Mall is six blocks away, as are numerous restaurants, two grocery stores, auto parts store, 24-hour Wal-Mart, two movie theaters, several bookstores, several computer parts stores, and even two hospitals and a Urgent Care clinic are within a mile of here. Freeway access to Interstate 75 and Interstate 675 are also within a mile. U-Haul rental is a couple blocks away as well on State Route 741.

We have a two bedroom/two bath with a wood-burning fireplace, dishwasher, in-sink garbage disposal, built-in microwave, electric stove and fridge. The apartments, apparently, were built in 1987, but are still in great condition. Maintenance is terrific. You call the office and they usually have somebody there that day, or within a day or two.
Both bedrooms have walk-in closets that are pretty large (about six feet deep - one has shelves the other doesn't.)
There is a swimming pool near the apartment office, and a lake with wild ducks and 2 "resident" swans that you can feed from the deck at the pool. The lake has fish too and a turtle or two.
There is an exercise room (although I've never used it.) Also they have a little "business center" with a fax machine and two computers. A tanning booth is also in the clubhouse.
The office also sponsors get-togethers on alot of the major holidays, cook-outs in the summer, parties in the clubhouse during colder weather.
Neighbors are pretty cool, not a lot of noise, most of the people are corporate that work for Lexus Nexus or National City Bank, whose offices are located close-by. People generally keep to themselves. Buildings are fairly secure, you have to buzz people into the building as the doors to the stairway are locked. Laundryroom (there is one washer/one dryer in each building), is fairly clean and maintained. Some apartments have their own washer/dryers, ours just have hookups for those appliances.

Parking is great. Outstanding my husband says. Plenty of space for parking, including a lot for RVs or Boats.
There is a tennis court, dog exercise facility, and even a small car wash/air hose machine.
Snow removal is great too. They hire people to drive around with trucks w/ plows to sweep the snow out of the parking lots. Also sidewalks are shoveled usually the same day or the next after a snow.
Pets are allowed, even BIG dogs for a small pet deposit plus monthly fee.
Office staff is really cool, always friendly, always professional.
Free DVD/video rental (collection is small, but hey it's free - can't expect a video store. It does have new titles in the collection though.)
They always have iced sugar cookies and lemonade in the office, also free microwave popcorn for movies, and even a little treat-bag of dry cat food or dog biscuits.
Police response is fast and excellent, last year the kids downstairs were playing "hide and seek" and the parents thought the kids blew out the pilot light on the water heater and thought they smelt gas. Emergency services were here within three or four minutes tops, and thorough in their response.
The property is landscaped very nicely. Pretty flowers and nice trees everywhere.

Negatives:
In the Spring and Fall, local woods smell like mildew, but generally the smell does not come into the apartment, unless you have your fireplace flue open or the patio door open all the time.

Because they allow dogs, there is sometimes a problem with people not cleaning up the yard of dog waste. But management is constantly reminding residents, by flyer, to clean up after their dogs. They also provide waste bags for dogs. This problem goes in cycles as to how diligent various residents are in cleaning up after dogs. Supposedly there is a $50 fine for NOT cleaning up after the dog, but since we don't have a dog, we don't know.
You *can* decorate, i.e. paint the apartment, but you *must* paint it back to boring apartment white walls before you leave.

Overall:
The negatives are very minor. Sure you pay a little more, but when you compare positves with negatives, the benefits outweighs any problems. We recently renewed our lease. You can either rent for a year or six months, (although six-month leases cost about $50 more a month then year leases.) After ending an exhaustive search for "cheaper" apartments, we decided to stay here. You truly get what you pay for, and we call it home. Highly recommended.
