We were told by the leasing manager that if other tenants were smoking it would not get into our apartment. They didn't tell us they were going to, but they moved us into an apartment right over a very heavy smoker and our apartment filled with smoke every day! We ended up moving to another building and it had the same problem. A maintenance guy even said he has known about this problem.

It's not extreme at all. Look at these Surgeon General warnings: - Smoking causes peripheral vascular disease - Smoking causes emphysema - Smoking causes mouth and throat cancer - Smoking clogs your arteries - Smoking - A leading cause of death - Quitting will improve your health - Smoking harms unborn babies - Smoking causes blindness - Smoking causes lung cancer - Smoking causes heart disease - Smoking doubles your risk of stroke - Tobacco smoke is toxic

People are entitled to live the way they want in their own homes. If you're that sensitive to cigarette smoke, perhaps you should not live in an apartment.

I highly doubt your apartment fills with smoke. lol. I also doubt you get any smoke in your apartment. Perhaps you can smell it in the hallways sometimes, but your apt fills with smoke? lol A little dramatic arent you?

We have been tenants here for 8 yrs now, and loved it for most of that time. However I am now experiencing problems because of the smoking of the tenant downstairs. I had assumed (naively) that, like hotel rooms, certain apartments were set aside for smokers, since I had never noticed a problem until recently. The gentleman downstairs goes outside to smoke because he has a little girl and apregnant wife, so he is aware of the dangers of his smoking to them. And he smokes a lot. As I'm sure he's addicted I feel badly for him. But it is absolutely true that the SMELL of the cigarette smoke is constantly in this apartment since they moved in. NO you can't SEE it - but I can definitely smell it, and it's causing problems w/my health. We have not had a hot summer, yet I have been forced to keep our A/C running 24/7 to try and keep out what I can. I say all of this not only to back up the claim of the original reviewer, but also to say that we are very disappointed that the management didn't attempt to try to mediate a solution to this problem for us. They would have in the past. That is why we have stayed here so many years and planned to stay here some more. Now, because of the threat to my health, I find myself on this website checking out other apartments when I would rather be doing other things. I have not been aware of the bank-like tactics that Western Reserve Management has been using on people w/their late fees, since we have had our rent automatically withdrawn every month. But I am really angered by that. I'm afraid that life here at The Islander isn't the nice peaceful life that it was when we first arrived. What a shame.

What building do you live in? Your situation sounds very similar to mine. Did the tenant below you work for the Islander cleaning the common areas? Was your situation ever resolved or did you move out? I am still hoping there will be a helpful response from property manager but knowing your fate will likely predict mine.
