DO NOT MOVE HERE!
When I first visited they gave me a folder with a flyer that said rent for a 1-bedroom is $444 a month. Then when I went to sign the lease, they told me $544, and that the flyer was from a promotion that happened years ago, and they do not offer the same utilities on the flyer, either. I should have walked out right there but I was 18, first time on my own, alone, and easily pushed into things I didn't want to do!
When I went to sign the lease, I asked to see the apartment before I sign it and the lady told me when signing a lease you NEVER see the apartment before signing it, and that I was not allowed to see the apartment before I signed the lease. I later found out this was illegal. They will try to explain the lease to you and push you through it. DON'T LET THEM! They will lie to you just to get you to sign!
There were MULTIPLE problems with the apartment that I was told would be fixed within a week, latest. It has been 11 months now and none of them have been fixed. I call twice a month at least and go once a month in person, they say the last person didn't put in the work orders and they will now (but never do. And it's the same person every time). Above the shower head on the ceiling is a continually growing dip in the ceiling. It is also bubbling along the ceiling corners all over the apartment. I was told that my bathroom ceiling was old damage and they will fix it once I move out. It has almost tripeled in size and I can now see cracks in the ceiling paint form. There was a huge crack in my living room window that let in air and rain. Therefore I spent lots extra on electricity during the summer months, for fans. My bedroom window also let in air. There were dents in the walls ALL OVER! The painter missed several spots. They just paint over everything. Even door hinges and door handles, just paint over it so it sticks and the door doesn't lock. And many, many more problems. During inspection of the apartment on the first day, the lady will say a lot of stuff doesn't need to be written down because it is unimportant. This is obviously a lie that I fell for since this was my first apartment alone at 18. They took advantage of me in the worst ways.
I called most recently about it because I sent Forest City an email to complain, but they just forwarded it to the property manager at Midtown without even reading it. I then called Midtown about it and Monica Jones hung up on me in the middle of a sentence. (I swear I was being way too nice) I finally contacted the property manager and she said that I actually hung up on her, then afer I said no, she said that I lost signal. Even though both of us were on landlines. And that ---'s excuse for not putting in work orders is because she just lost her son a few years ago and used to have cancer (Yeah, because no one else has medical problems in life except her....). Then she went on to say that I never contacted them a single time about work orders. After meeting with her she said everything would be fixed by the next day. Since then I have called maybe 6 times, emailed maybe 7 times and she screens my calls so she wont answer them. She does not respond.
It's been over 5 months and the same car is sitting in the first parking spot of the 3rd building, with 2 flat tires and expired license tags from June 2008. Property Manager promised to have it towed within 24 hours, and it has been over a month and it is still sitting there.
People finally came into my apartment to fix my window. They left my door (the one to get into my apartment from the halls) unlocked and open (I've had nights where I hear people trying to see if my door is unlocked so they can rob me. So obviously leaving a door unlocked and open is not good). They also put holes in my walls. They insulated my windows with styrofoam and paper towels since they measured wrong the first time, I guess. They also track dirt all over, move your things around and do not put things back. They never left any slip saying they were there, which they legally have to.
I sent an email saying that no one is allowed in my apartment without my supervision beacuse they obviously need to be babysat since I found beer bottle caps also in my apartment. Since then they have entered my apartment 5 times without my approval or without notice. I just can tell because of the mess they leave. They came last two days ago, and messed up my curtains, moved my grocery cart, and removed some metal rods that were left there 2 weeks earlier. The property manager finally got back to that email and said no one was in my apartment since the first replaced the window. (which is a full out lie. She has done nothing but lie this entire time)
They told me my rent could never increase. That water and heat was paid by Midtown. Then I contacted them about a $3 water increase they implemented last month (even though in Building 3 the water is shut off probably once a month because of the fact that the pipes always break and drown the front parking lot). That Monica lady said that Midtown is allowed to increase water. Then that water is included as rent. Then that rent can never be increased. Then water is paid by me. Then water is separate from rent. Then water is paid by midtown. Then I finally gave up and said fine. (as you can tell she has a problem staying with one truth) Then we somehow started talking about my problems and she said she would put in a work order, which is when I said "Well people have put in work orders before but it turns out they never did." Only she hung up on be in the middle of the sentence.
The hallways REEK all the time. The ceiling tiles in the halls always get overtaken by water leak damage and crumble on the ground. The janitor does not clean this up for over a week.
DO NOT MOVE HERE!!!! You can get it cheaper and better, elsewhere! They do illegal things and treat you worse than dirt. I honestly didn't even mention everything wrong, just some bigger things. Please protect yourself and do not move here!!----------------lies and goes against the law and she teaches the renting staff to do the same! Maintenance never fixes anything. Please don't get yourself caught in all of this!

Wow, I've lived here since March and have had nothing but good come of it. They've fixed stuff the same day I call about it. In my lease they explained to me that the rent is $594 but that I get a $100 credit for the special they were running. They've never ever left my apartment door unlocked for anything. The leasing agent was extremely nice and bent over backwards for me on certain things. In regards to the hallways, you can't expect every apartment complex you move in to to smell like roses. There are different types of people in each building making different foods and using air fresheners and other stuff...the hallways are going to smell bad. I'm not sure who you talked to and why you are having these problems....but you talked to the wrong person. I got to see my apartment before signing the lease. Maybe they didn't let you see it because it wasn't going to be up to your standards at the time. If I was you, I would have demanded a different apartment if it is as bad as you are saying, why put yourself in that position.

I understand this place will not be perfect. Like the fact that cats are sometimes roaming the halls (I'm HIGHLY allergic to cats), the smell was expected by not this bad, the crooked fixtures all over my apartment, the bug problems, the constant banging from the residents above me, dents in my appliances, etc. But for the amount I was paying, I expect better. And I know that not EVERYONE will have the same exact experience as I did. But if they did it to me when I was super nice and over trusting of them, then they will do it to everyone else.
And I did not "demand" another apartment because when I asked, the lady during the walk through said I had to keep this apartment since I already signed the lease, and that all my problems would be fixed within the first week. So that is why I didn't get another apartment. They took advantage of me and scammed me. I find it amazing that you are having a perfect time there. You must live in another development, or just lying, because the staff I have met are extraordinarily rude and not helpful. Especially since the manager is ignoring me.
