Overall Great

I really do like Portage Pointe Apartments. The back of the apartments overlooks into a beautiful wooded area. The apartments are spacious, and I love how they are set up. You'll find the people who live here to be kept to themselves and mind their own business.
Parking is not a problem. I really don't understand why people rant about not finding a parking spot. I suppose if you don't want to walk more than 20 steps to your apartment then you might complain. There's always parking spots, maybe not right next to your door, but exercise is good.
Noise...I never have had a problem with noise. Occasionally, someone plays their music with a little bass, but this happens once a week at the most. I'm next to the washer and dryer and can barely hear them.
Grounds...as I mentioned, the woods in the back are beautiful. Overall, the grounds are very nice! The only problem is that the trash bin can get overstuffed and then trash bags fly around everywhere and nobody picks them up.
Safety...I rated this the lowest. Here comes my biggest complaint. THE DOORS DO NOT HAVE DEADBOLTS ON THEM. YOU HAVE TO BUY ONE FOR $75!! Ridiculous. I know for a fact that they cost them $5 to buy, and 10 minutes to install. This should be a "luxury" given to all renters. Safety is not something that should be paid for, and unless I get to keep this golden deadbolt when I leave I'm sure not paying for one. You can't install your own either. I would really like to see this changed. I would totally edit this review to an all positive one if this would change.
Construction...The buildings are nice. Make sure you get into the newer buildings. The older ones are so so. I had mice in my apartment. (scared you away did I') There is an attic above the apartments where mice like to hang out. I called maintenance, and an "exterminator" came who set up mouse traps. Gee thanks. I took the matter, and expense, into my own hands and threw some poison pellets into the attic myself...no more mice. I called maintenance again to seal up the hole in the furnace room where they were coming from, but they did not because...well I don't know why. So I did it myself again.
Maintenance...Very nice guys in maintenance. The problem is the budget they have to go by. Unfortunately, they can't replace things very often when broke. Believe me when I say they will find any way possible to get things to "work" instead of replacing them. Many things in the apartments are very outdated because of this.
Staff...pretty solid staff here. Very nice to deal with. They typical know your name and will handle your problems well. I appreciate them very much.
Overall...So here's the deal. Come here if you want a good value for square foot, and would like to be near lots of retail. You'll find a younger crowd who commute to work everyday. Safety is fine, minus the deadbolt issue. To make your place wonderful, you'll need to put some work into it, because maintenance won't. I am overall pleased with the apartments here. The rumor mill has them raising rent $50 next year, which I will put towards a moving truck. :-)
Good:
-Apartment size
-Cost...for the most part
-Grounds...for you nature lovers
-Staff...very friendly
Bad
-Deadbolts...or lack thereof
-Maintenance budget...although I love the guys
-Cleanliness of common grounds...like the hallways
Overall the good outweighs the bad. I will stay here as long as I can with my current rent payment.
