After some last minute housing problems, my roommate and I realized that Emerald Greens was the only complex we could find offering two bedroom apartments in our price range. The apartment itself wasn't bad at all ' the carpeting was spotty and thin, but generally what you'd expect for what we paid. Our appliances worked, for the most part, and when they didn't, maintenance would fix things within a week. The courtyard was disgusting and smelled terribly, as tenants just let their dogs relieve themselves in common areas. The problems we had were with the other tenants. Emerald Greens was just not a safe place for two young women to live. Half of our building was always vacant, which was nice in regards to noise, but disquieting when you would see men emerging from an apartment you knew was empty. Two apartments in the building were occupied by at least 5 people each (and these were all one- or two-bedroom apartments.) It seemed that the police were there at least once a month, usually on some sort of drug complaint. In the last month we lived there, my boyfriend and I called the police ourselves after realizing that what we were hearing from the apartment beneath us was a women being beaten by her boyfriend. We were finally able to get out of our lease by convincing the management that our reasonable expectation of safety was violated by such activities. I'm not saying that these things couldn't have happened anywhere else; but they did all happen at Emerald Greens. I don't know why, but it certainly seems to attract the most unsavory of characters. My advice is to pay more and live in a better place. If you have to live here, get a big dog.
