Sophomore Trap

Now I understand why my friends say "oh, I lived there when I was a sophomore". You come from paying 800 a month in the dorms, and everything seems like a good deal. I even read the reviews here but figured that these were just angry people. Not so.
*The biggest problem for me is the price. For what I am paying I could be in a one-bedroom with my own furniture. The appliances are from the late 90s, so they are not very energy efficient. In other words, you will always go over on your electricity allowance. My roommate and I also think that we are both being charged for just one overage. It's also a ----- to pay your rent. They do not accept cash (even for a $15 electricity bill). You have to give them a check or money order, or you can pay online with a $10 service charge (again, even if you're just paying a $15 electricity charge).
*The furniture is really lousy. What sucks even worse is that you cannot ask the complex to remove it if you want to use your own, even if it is just one chair. You have to arrange for it to be stored. The rooms have such weird placement that there is only one way to efficiently place the furniture, and the "wooden" furniture (dressers etc) are super heavy and made from particle board covered in contact paper. Now that's classy.
*There is very little noise insulation. I can hear every time my upstairs neighbors flush the toilet and, ahem, shake the beds.
*Maintenance was ok. Requests were filled in a timely manner abouthalf of the time. We requested something two weeks ago that has not been fixed, but we got a new washer and dryer a month ago when ours stopped working. One day they came in for an inspection while I was sleeping. I didn't hear the knock because I had my bedroom door closed. That was not a preferable experience.
*Cable service is pretty nice, but the wireless internet service is terribly slow.
In conclusion, don't fall for this sophomore money trap. You can do much better if you do some exploring.
