It's all smoke and mirrors

This is by far the worst apartment living experience that I have had. I moved in in June of 2005 and at first things seemed to be going great. My apartment was ready on the date I selected and the move went smoothly. However, I soon realized that I had smokers living both underneath me and beside me so my apartment constantly smelled of smoke, especially the bathroom. Not to mention that the walls are rather thin and I could hear my neighbor coughing and throwing up each morning. Still I was hopeful that I would enjoy living there. After the first few days of getting luck with a parking spot, I realized how terrible the rest of the parking is. The spots are incredibly tiny and half the time people will take up 2 spots in order to keep their car from getting dinged which makes for even less parking available close to the apartments. I eventually began parking in the far north area which was fine other than I was quite far from my apartment and they do not have adequate lighting at night.

I did have to request maintenance a few times and the requests were always processed within a few days which seemed great to me. However, there were other problems such as loud neighbors and noisy parties and also some sketchy people that appeared to be moving in over the last few months. I got a pet and had to pay the enormous pet deposit ($400 of which $200 is refundable) which didn't make me too happy, but then I probably shouldn't have gotten a pet. What really began my dislike for the aparmtent complex happened in March when I was "late" with my rent. I had been out of town and didn't get back until March 2nd. Rent is considered late on the 3rd of the month (which is completely ridiculous) but any other time when I've run into this problem I've been able to put it in the night drop early on the 3rd before the office opens and it has been fine. So on the morning of the 3rd, I stop on my way to work to drop my rent off and for some reason the office is open early. The sign on the door doesn't say that they are open, the night drop hasn't been tape shut, but there are members of the leasing staff in the doorway. As I walk up a girl reaches out and I had her my rent check and she asks if my late fee is included. I look at her like she's crazy and she tells me that it's the 3rd so rent is late. I tell her that I don't have the late fee and she tells me that she can't accept it and hands it back to me! So I go inside and they look up my apartment number and assess my late fee ($54!!!) and I say that I'll be by after work, which they didn't seem too happy about. Once I am at work, I call the manager and ask if there is any way that I can have the late fee waived since I was there that morning and had not been late on my rent in the 9 months that I had lived there. She proceeded to tell me that "if I did that for you then I'd have to do it for everyone" to which I wanted to say everyone might appreciate a one time grace period!

Following that I decided that I was not going to renew my lease and I began to make plans to move out. Which was a great idea because once the May got here my electricity bill was through the roof because my air wasn't working and the apartment had no ventilation! I set my move out date however I did call and ask if I could extend it for 2 more weeks. The manager did call back and let me know that I could stay and my rent would be prorated. I was expecting it to be about half of what I pay now which would be around $255-260, but when she gave me the amount it was almost $340!!! They charged me the new rate of my apartment plus the additional $50 for the month-to-month fee!!! Can't you give a girl a break'

Finally move out date came and I encountered a few problems that day but I was pretty much over it and ready to move on. Until yesterday when I opened my mail and found out that they are keeping the refundable part of my pet deposit and charging me more money for cleaning fees and replacing the bathroom countertop!!! I'm still working on getting everything settled but this is what has officially sent me over the edge with this apartment complex and management company.

I have never felt more mistreated and undervalued as a resident. I will never again live in any Allstate Management property nor will I recommend it to anyone that I know. They will nickel and dime you for all that you're worth and their leasing staff is terrible. So don't be fooled. It might seem nice at first, but stay there for a few months and you'll begin to see that it's all smoke and mirrors.
