This is a long one... First, the manager in the office was awful. Nasty mean, hateful and insulting to everyone. We always felt sorry for the girls who worked in the office with her. When we moved out we had to schedule a "walk-through" or "check-out inspection" and the manager stood us up. We had to take time off work to move and didn't have a lot of time to wait around for someone to show up. That weekend was 4th of July and we actually didn't get anyone to do the "walk-through" until July 7th. The manager sent one of the new girls in the office to do it even though she had no idea what she was supposed to look for. A couple of months after we moved out we got a letter from a collection agency. The manager claimed that we owed a week's rent claiming that we weren't technically "moved out" on June 30th because the "walk-through" had not been done and keys had not been returned. One the main reasons we were moving was because we got a dog and when we went to go pay the pet deposit the manager said that even though the dog was under the weight limit of 30 lbs. it was too tall and too large for a 1-BR apartment and told us to get rid of the dog, get a smaller one or move into a 2-BR. Whatever... We decided we were tired of her tyranny and we'd go rent a nice little house and be much happier (which we did and we are). We decided to keep the dog but since we couldnt have her in the apartment we decided to board her for the next month (which cost us almost $300) and gave our 30-day notice to vacate. Anyway, back to the letter... The letter also said that we were being retro-actively charged the $250 pet deposit for the dog that we had in the apartment for less than 72 hours. There were some charges added for cleaningand coincidently, all these (bogus) charges added up to just over the amount of the security deposit they were supposed to refund. I had a copy of the receipt for boarding the dog as well as all of the walk-through documentation. I responded to the collection agency and explained that A) we could not expected to pay a pet deposit retro-actively for a dog that we were not allowed to keep (I enclosed the dated notice to remove the dog from the premises that the manager had taped to my door and the receipt from the vet showing the dog being boarded that same day and remaining there for the next 40 days as well as a copy of the walk-through where it clearly stated that there was no damage to the apartment, i.e. no pet damage either) and B) according to the rental agreement, the $250 pet deposit was fully refundable, and seeing as there was no pet damage, even if we agreed to pay this retro-active pet deposit they would have to turn around and refund it right back to usso what would be the point' A few days later, I got a call from the collection agency and the man asked me if I had the original, signed walk-through documentation or if I had a copy. I told him that I had an original, filled out and signed in ink by the girl who did the walk-through, the manager and by myself and my boyfriend. He then informed me that the documentation he received from the manager had been altered. I asked him to fax over a copy of what he had received from the manager. I was shocked to see that she had doctored the documentation, and done a bad job of it too. It was obvious that she had used white-out in places and scratched over some of the words and added words in places. and how odd that she could only produce a copy, not a handwritten original. He held the papers over each other and could see that most of the writing and the signatures matched precisely and it was obvious that she had made an attempt to fraudulently collect monies from us with her bogus claims. I got a letter from the collection agency saying that the matter had been dropped and his agency would no longer pursue claims on their behalf due to the attempted fraud. I guess he didnt feel like going down that alley with a shady client. As for the actual property, it features 2 pools, one is right next to the office and the other is down at the back end of the complex. The pool up front boasts nice chairs, clean blue water and a shower/changing room. The pool at the back end (where we were) was full of broken chairs (one actually broke while a child was sitting in it, his weight finally breaking the bent metal leg and slashing his leg, requiring 11 stitches and a tetanus shot), green clumpy water (yes, I said clumpy) and the shower/changing room was packed full of grounds-keeping and maintenance supplies and kept locked at all times. Maintenance requests from tenants were regarded as optional or if you have time or if the tenant is a young, attractive female. One of the female tenants filed a formal complaint with the police department because she found a needle and syringe in her apartment in the bathroom trash after the maintenance man had been there to work on her sink. When she asked the manager, she said that he must be diabetic. The tenant, a phlebotomist, knew that the type of needle she found was not the type that diabetics used to inject insulin, nor did she see any evidence of lancets or blood-sugar testing strips that had been used and thrown away in the same trash can. The laundry room was closed even during posted hours and one of the tenants actually used a tire iron to pry the door open because the maintenance man had locked it while his laundry was in the dryer, including his uniforms for work that evening. Basically, this place is a dump. The people who run it are your typical basic slum-lords who will pull whatever crap they think they can away with in order to get what they want. They view tenants and sleaze balls (which some tenants are) or losers who arent good enough to own their own home. I would say that this place is a little below average and the rent is a little high for what you get. There are nicer places that will treat you better and dont have drug addicts or ex-cons for employees.
