Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2003

I am not proud to admit that I lived at Tiffany house for a year. It started off good when I moved in in December 2002. I lived on the fourth floor, on the North East corner in a two bedroom apartment. When I first moved in, the carpet was dirty and before I moved any furniture in I asked for the carpet to be cleaned. Someone from house keeping showed up with a small can of carpet cleaner so I sent her on her way and called in a professional carpet cleaner. Oh yeah, rather than clean the dust off the molding that surrounded the wall, someone took a spray can of paint and painted it white. The entire apartment was a patch work of different paint colors. I asked them to fix the problem and they sent someone up with a small can of paint. I hired someone to paint the two bedrooms which were pretty bad. After moving in there were other problems. With a south wind, the cigarette smoke from all the apartments came through my apartment, especially when I opened the patio door. We taped the door with duct tape and placed a wet towel under the gap in the door to block the smoke. In the summer, our airconditioner died and it took them 4 weeks of working on it to declare it dead. That happened only because I spoke with the manager and threatened a lawsuit for breach of contract if it was not fixed. One day, in July I came home to find the airconditioner gone from the apartment. It was two weeks before they finally installed the new unit. I did notice one thing after it was installed, my electric bill jumped by 75%. Previously they paid for the heat and air, and we were charged for the lights and electrical outlets. My electric bill at a different apartment complex was much cheaper once we moved. My next door neighbor was a young kid that held parties all the time, we complained and the parties slowed down. What didn't slow down was the pot smoking, it was strong enough to come into our apartment. Finally one day I caught him at the elevator and mentioned something about my wife working for DEA. That stopped the pot smoking immediately, but they were paranoid and would crack the door when we came home. Nights were always noisy especially when the fire alarms went off. The parking lot was dark and several tenants had been mugged out there. Trips to the car at night meant you had to be armed. Finally the carlot across the road added a bunch of lights to their new parking lot. It was so bright that we felt we lived in a fish bowl, even with the blinds closed it seemed like daylight. However if you could park in the front, it meant you would not be mugged - too much light. We had to use a electronic key to open the front door, but if you were locked out all you had to do was wait for someone to open the door, go in the back way which was always open, or go to the side doors which were not locked. However only certain doors remained open, so you would have to walk up to that door go in and catch the elevator. I remember cockroaches being a problem, especially with the trash chute. When we were moving out, the apartment building had been sold. The new owners fabulous maintenance team played with the boiler and there was a build up of carbon monoxide in the building, it had to be evacuated. It was pretty cool watching all the firetruck sitting in the parking lot. I caught one of the maintenance guys and asked them to learn more about the HVAC system in the building before they killed someone. I probably didn't use very kind words when spoke to him. My advice if your looking for an apartment, look elsewhere. If you can afford it, move into a house.
