Maybe my standards are too low, but I'm a 22 year old single male with a dog, and I've lived in some pretty nasty places in my short time.. Whitehorse is a decent place to live if you're short on money but want somewhere with legitimate quality. I'll tell you some cons, and then pros so you end up with a good impression.
First of all, there are spiders here. If you have severe arachniphobia, probably not a good place. They have been spraying recently though, so that helps alot. If you live downstairs, you can hear every snore, step and fart from the people above you. The toilets are all crooked and kinda unstable. The washer and dryer are not full size, but mine are pretty new. The doors do not seem to be the exact size and I can see some sunlight from outdoors during the day. Me, being on bottom and in the middle of the building really helps my insulation.. My electricity bill during this hellacious summer never got above 85 bucks, and I kept it around 75 when I was here. They allow pets but it has to be under 10 pounds and you have to pay a 200 dollar one time pet fee. The pool is nice, but is closed Mondays and all fall, spring & winter. There's 4 sizes in apartments.. I live in the 1 bedrooms. If you can help it, shell out the 30 bucks extra for the larger 1 bedroom model. I have a king bed and a computer desk and I can NOT emphasize how cramped it is. The tap water tastes like it's directly from the lake, so invest in a PUR water filter and you'll be fine. The refrigerators aren't bad, but nothing fancy either.. No icemakers. If you live on the west side, with all the 2 bedrooms, parking is HELL. If you live on the east side, it's fantastic. The large field surrounding the pool is filled with dog leftovers, so tread carefully.
Now the Pros: I've had 2 problems with disposal and ceiling.. They've fixed it the next day. Compared to anywhere else in Yukon these apartments are a steal.. They're almost half the price of the Links & Highland Pointe, allow some pets, and aren't ghetto like the other apartments in Yukon limits. It's located right by the turnpike and highway 66.. It's very easy to get anywhere you need to go. The city is expanding toward the turnpike as well, so in the coming years, it will be more populated with businesses. There are 2-3 cops who work security there as well, so that helps keep vagrants away. The managers are firm with their attention to you, and don't let you break rules.. But aren't too bothersome either. They allow gas and charcoal grills outside, and normal lawn furniture.
It's a pretty good place, if you add up all the factors.. You get what you pay for, and although it's not a steal, it's a deal you should take if you're looking for a place to live in the area.
