Overall poor experience

I agree with many of the other reviews. You get what you pay for. The unadvertised hike to the garbage compactor and extremely poor parking was the least of my (if not my roommates or guests') complaints. When viewing the apartments, I was shown an apartment that wasn't "quite ready yet", but I liked the layout, location and setting of that apartment (more parking, privacy, middle floor). Trying to be understanding, I looked passed this (to my dismay) and continued with the process. After placing that apartment on hold, and giving notice to previous landlord (we needed more space), I was informed that the management had made a mistake and the apartment that I had been promised was already leased to someone else. In a pickle, I accepted the offer to another less than desireable location and floor plan (less parking, less privacy, ok floor plan, 3rd floor)which I found out later was also more rent each month. The upside was that behind the apartment was a beautiful woodsy area that I LOVED (they soon sold that to a developer who immediately cleared everything and was building a subdivision right outside our deck when we moved out - ANY appeal left for that apartment disappeared). Upon move in, the apartment was in very poor condition. "Clean" but in old and poor condition (chipped counter tops, misfit appliances, lenoleum floors peeling up, etc) and many repairs needed. After a short time, the overwhelming smell of cat urine began eminating from the carpet. We did not own a cat. A month and half after moving in I received a message saying they had received my 30 days notice and asked if I wanted to renew my lease before moving out (specifically naming my name and apartment number), later that same day, I received another message saying that I owed more money to the complex. Neither of these messages made any sense, and when I called and inquired of both of these messages, the response was...amaxing. They really had no clue and didn't even try to figure it out (or even wonder how they had mixed me up like that with someone else and there was no apology given, no anything, just that I owed money and if I didn't pay, it would be considered late rent and I would be charged fees and the eviction process - would begin over something around $25. I received an eviction notice for not having paid rent(which I had paid on time. When the issue was resolved, again, there was no explanation nor apology. There was continued drama concerning my mail and the packages I needed to receive, with no help from management - only that I would have to work that out. I still was not receiving my mail/packages more than 6 months into the lease. I also did not receive notice of receiving packages and had to hunt them down when I knew they were coming. On one occasion, one of my guests received a parking ticket, with no explanation and for no apparent reason (other than money). Management would not help as "they have nothing to do with that". To the ticketer's credit, my friend was reimbursed the money from a 3rd party after calling the number on the ticket. I did not have a problem with maintenance. Every time I called something in, it was fixed immediately and I never had problems with the maintenance staff. Mold was a problem and the insulation is horrible. My room was over-heated (just the way I like it) with the thermostat at 50 degrees, and my roomates rooms were freezing cold with thermostat at 80 degrees. Our electric bills also reached more than $121/month even with us turning the heat down/off before leaving for work most days. I could hear everything the neighbors were doing, tv, stereo, dishes, showers, getting ready for work at 5:00 am, even normal conversations. Oh, but we made great entertainment of guessing who was coming up the stairs, and trying to sneak up on each other, as we could hear everyone walking up the stairs. We also could not play at the park often for the mud and marsh and had to go elsewhere. There are many good walking trails in the area. Before we moved out, we got new neighbors and suddenly our apartment was filled with clouds of cigarette smoke on a daily basis. Every apartment has their quirks - we can't expect perfection. However, my experience with the management at Country Gables was horrendous and I would not recommend them. We moved into new apartments after we were married. I would recommend the new place hands down to Country Gables any day and the slight price difference is well worth it. As unhelpful, inefficient and uncaring as the management seemed to be at Country Gables, most of them were very courteous to me during my stay.
