I actually stopped by this site to look for another apartment complex and I'm very surprised to see that San Remo has been rated so highly. I've been living in San Remo for 1 year and 7 months and it's definitely time to leave! This place has been nothing but a string of nightmares.
When my boyfriend and I first moved in (November 2005) we were excited because we were given a really great move in special. It didn't take us long to regret taking the deal. We were kept up every night for the first few months by our neighbors yelling at each other and screaming babies. I can understand the babies, but adults' Come on! We were also routinely woken up at 6-8am every morning by the children upstairs playing tackle football (or so it sounded). We could also hear sexual encounters and domestic violence from all the way across the complex. We even heard a few gun shots. Our neighbors had the same problems and told us not to bother complaining because their complaints were always ignored. We found out that they were right.
We also regretted moving in after we signed our second lease and our rent went up by $180. $150 of this was our original discount and the other $30 was "inflation". Now that it's time to renew again they want to raise the rent by another $80. In all other apartments I've lived in the rent doesn't go up after your lease ends. Generally, apartments like to keep loyal tenants and do so by locking in rates. This doesn't exist here.
We were also disgusted by our upstairs neighbors throwing trash down onto our porch and balcony every day. We were littered with newspapers, old sneakers, food wrappers, soda and beer cans and caps, partially eaten food, broken toys and cigarette butts. The children from upstairs even smeared mud all over the outside of our apartment. We complained to management several times. We were told they would speak with the offenders, but I doubt anything happened because nothing ever changed until they moved out. It even took the maintenance people 4 months to clean the mud off of our apartment (we had no hose attachments to do it ourselves).
A huge source of trouble for us was when the "landscapers" (AKA lawnmower dudes) broke our sliding glass window with a rock from the lawnmower. They never reported their accident to management, but we did. Even though it was their mistake it took them over 2 weeks to fix the sliding glass door because they would only come during business hours, Monday through Friday. They tried to illegally enter our apartment to fix it three times, but were interrupted by our dog. I finally had to enlist my father to watch over the apartment while they fixed it on my work day.
I think the biggest problem is trying to get a hold of the people in management to fix any of these problems. They commonly close their offices 30 minutes to an hour early on a daily basis. Half the time they choose not to answer the phone in the office. I've actually sat outside their offices, called them and watched them sit around and chat until they realized I was going to keep calling them until I got to speak with a person.
Two times during our stay we have been served with late fees of $75 each (which they assess after 4 days of latency). The first one was a misunderstanding between me and my boyfriend, however, two days before the fee I had been speaking with someone in the leasing office regarding our broken window. She was looking at our rental file and did not mention that they never received my rent (I could've gotten it to them on time). Two days later the fee came. When I asked why it wasn't mentioned the other day I was told, "It's not my responsibility to hold your hand and tell you when to pay your rent." That pissed me off. The second time was just this week. My boyfriend made a visit to the leasing office to notify them of a bank issue we were experiencing and asked if they can work with us on the late fee. He was told they would work with us, but we got the fee notice on our door 2 days later.
Some other reviews mentioned problems with the pool and hot tub. I can vouch for these statements. The pool area is almost never clean, the hot tub isn't hot, the pool is sometimes locked for no reason, and during the daytime there are way too many children and inappropriate men to even consider going near the pool. The best bet is to violate pool rules and go around midnight. Even then sometimes there are small children and inappropriate men.
Also, the complaints about parking are true. There aren't enough spaces for everyone's cars and people who don't pay the extra $20 monthly will park in your carport space. Cars get vandalized on a regular basis here and the dumpsters are ever-overflowing.
Lastly, upon moving in we discovered the apartment had a flea and roach problem. We complained several times after moving in and nothing was ever done. Many other neighbors reported the same neglect to us. If you don't like roaches then don't move in here. We've tried sprays, traps and fogs. Nothing has worked because the infestation moves throughout the building.
All in all this place is horrible. It would be nice if they got rid of their snotty, lazy, incompetent apartment management, emptied the dumpsters more often, actually resolved tenant issues, fixed things in a timely manner, started assigning parking spaces, cleaned the pool area, and exterminated their buildings. I would gladly pay more rent just to get out of here!

It is not the office's job to make sure that you pay the rent. You aren't the only person that lives there. I am sure they have several tennants. I bet I would have told you the same thing. If you want things to be perfect, buy a house.
