Well maintained, but older buildings

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2005
I stayed at Casa Grande Apts next door which is managed by the same real estate agency and the pool is shared with both complexes. The buildings are somewhat old (1960s-70s) style. That said, the buildings are pretty well maintained although the appliances (e.g.,refrigerator that you have to defrost every 3-4 months) are pretty old. However, they will fix stuff quickly and I did manage to get them to put a new dishwasher in my unit after having it fixed 5 times over several months (although it does get tiring to call the manager every 3 weeks because something is wrong). The carpeting in some units also shows its age. But the walls have no or very few dings, the doors close and it is decent for the price.
The worst part in the buildings is the insulation, the windows are single pane and it is like a windtunnel in there. You can expect heating bills for $100 each month in the winter even if you just are home in the evening and leave the heat off during the day/while asleep at night. They also have ceiling heat which is not very efficient.
The landlord is very picky about cleanliness and most tenants I've talked to have complained that they got too much money taken out of their security deposits (e.g. a $100 charge for cleaning dead bugs out of the lights). We cleaned like crazy for 2 days straight, and managed to get the entire deposit back, although not without some haranguing. So take a day or two to clean very thoroughly and ask for a personal walk through when you move out so that they can't bill you for stuff that was clean, just like they did to other people I talked to who just turned in the keys and then could not complain about the deposit. Taking some pictures during the move in may help too.
The complex is relatively quiet although it is surrounded by other apartment buildings and there can always be a noisy party somewhere, and most Friday nights there was always some kind of talking/yelling on the streets or so. But that's what you get when you live that close to campus.
The soundproofing between units isn't great and you can hear other people's TV or video game or bass and that can be quite annoying if you are trying to study. But they don't let too many party people move in.
Rent was quite reasonable, especially with a 1 yr lease.
