Beware of tricks

I lived here for 3 happy years. It is a nice quiet place and I found that they have fairly strict rules that are enforced. So far, I would recommend the place. I moved out because I was going to spend a year abroad and I was planning on moving back in when I return. That was, until they tried to scam me. Before moving out, I had made arrangements with the manager to walk through the apartment after I vacated it. At the last moment, however, she told me she had never said such a thing and wasn't going to be in that day. So I dropped the key into the box and left. I called 2 weeks later to ask if everything was ok and she told me she hadn't looked at the apartment yet. Several weeks after that, I received a very high bill for repairs. They included such things as re-finishing the kitchen cabinets because of stains (which I had never seen on them), a new dryer hose (which I know was in perfectly fine condition when I left and which I had bought myself upon moving in because the one in the apartment was more hole than hose), and a replacement door for the patio (which was also in perfectly fine condition when I vacated the apartment). Basically, they were trying to take advantage of the fact that I am abroad. After several letters back and forth, we settled at half the amount they initially wanted, but that was still too much. Next time I rent an apartment, I am going to take pictures upon moving in and again when moving out so they can't pull this trick on me again.

Anytime you move into a new place you should ALWAYS take pictures and/or fill out your MOVE IN CHECK LIST paperwork as cautiously as possible. Keep copies for yourself and put them in a safe place. Whenever you rent a place and sign a rental agreement or a lease, that is a legal binding contract you're signing!! It's best to watch out for yourself just as the apartments MUST watch out for themselves.
