Good place, but the new owners are raising the rent...

I moved here in March of this year, and the management staff was great. I only had two minor maintenance requests, and they were taken care of the same day. For the price and location, my 1-bedroom apartment was a good deal. But the complex recently changed owners and management, and the rent is being raised. Currently, I pay $545 month-to-month, but that rate is being bumped up to $680(!!). Alternatively, if I sign a lease it would only be $610, but that's still steep. According to the new owner, the market rate for my apartment is $700 a month, so they're spinning the new increase as a "discount".
Security is another concern here. My car was broken into in the parking lot a month after I moved in, and the stereo was stolen. It's not a crime-ridden neighborhood by any means, but transients do frequent the area since it's close to the freeway and the Washington-Jefferson park.
Were it not for the raise in rent, I'd have no problem staying here; the location is great. But I just can't afford to pay that much, and don't want to sign a lease.
