Renter Beware

I had lived at Fairway Village for a time (as it was a last resort move), and in my opinion, it was one of the worst places that I could have placed myself and my child in. The maintanence was absolutely deplorable, and if I had problems with one of their 18 old appliances, I was told that I wasn't operating it correctly (i.e. the dishwasher leaking rusty water, mold in the back of the refrigerator that I was told to break up using a screwdriver, etc.). I was told by a pest control expert, that there was a lot of standing water underneath the buildings, which caused problems with mold throughout the units (I had pink and black mold that I would clean daily from my walls, and front door that was blistering from the excess moisture and that would not close properly). The water is turned off an average of once a month, to basically put a bandaid on pipes that do not function properly. As a result of this, I have encountered cockroaches in my sink, where I was told that they come through the cracks in the pipes when the main water is shut off. I have had experiences (along with other neighbors), of murky water backing up through the toilet and bathtub. Sometimes, the rinse water from the laundry room would flood my toilet as well. You will find several stray cats (sometimes with kittens) wandering the grounds that are sometime littered with orange peels, an occasional dirty diaper outside one's door, etc. The windows of some residents will be extremeley dirty, where the blinds are broken. The noise level is somewhat excessive. Most often you will hear stereos next door turned up late into the night. The last straw at this residence, was when I encountered an infestation of mite-like insects inside my home, crawling on everything I owned. After inspection, it was learned that the walls were suffering from a substantial amount of dry rot, thus creating a breeding ground for numerous insects. Other maintanence problems I had encountered included my bathroom exhaust fan. It was caked with black mold, and dripped water onto the toilet seat below after it rained. The only remedy maintanence provided, was wiping down the sides of the fan with tissue paper, and calling the job done. I couldn't begin to tell you how disgusted I was with such work. I was forced to move during my stay into another unit, because a water hose broke in my bathroom, flooding the hallway and into both bedrooms. Instead of following proper protocol, they set up a carpet dryer that I was to run for the next two days (of which they did not offer to reimburse, as it ran on my electric bill), and then tacked the soured carpeting back down onto the moldy carpet pad. Since my leave, I have moved into a far more pleasant (and 100% cleaner) complex that is actually less expensive than what I was paying at Fairway Village (and it even includes a washer and dryer in the unit). If you visit Fairway Village, ask about ALL of the complex's defects, and get it into writing. A few new residents were actually deceived when they moved in, as they were told that the plumbing and repairs are top-knotch. I spoke to one, who could smell something similar to sewage, whereas, the manager simply told her to turn on the heater, where the smell would go away. Thank goodness she was signed only to a 6-month lease!
