Bad Value

My fiance and I lived in a one bedroom here for 2 years. Here are my gripes about it:

Getting in. They required SO MUCH information from us, it was a really long and tedious application process. Because we had not rented before, we needed co-signers, which is fine. But because of some B.S. about how they wouldn't accept faxed documents from my parents who live 90 miles away, we had to stay the night in a motel upon moving here. At first we thought it was nice that they screened people so carefully, but there are somehow so many scumbags that live here. That brings me to my next gripe,

The people. They get in fights in the middle of the night, play loud music, neighbors are inconsiderate, a-holes pull up blaring rap music out of their cars, etc. The apartment above us has had probably 6 or 7 different people in this 2 year time, all have been evicted, or disappeared on a whim, or something. It just seems weird that all of these shady people live here when they apparently screen people so meticulously. We have made complaints about these issues, and the landlords didn't seem too keen on doing anything about it.

The pool / the surroundings generally. Yes they have a pool. But what they don't tell you is that a whole bunch of annoying screaming children are in there every minute that the pool is open. It would be nice if they had an adult swim or something but they don't. Also, this complex is PACKED with children who make noise all day and early in the morning.

The rent for a one bedroom is $665 right now. Add 50 bucks to that price right off the bat, because water, sewer, and garbage is not included in that price. The heat in these apartments are those baseboard ones with no moving parts. We used them ONCE on one of the days that it was really cold and it brought our electric bill from the usual $60 dollar range to $90. So if you plan on living here plan on not using heat. That was from using these outdated baseboard heaters on a single night. All of the appliances are electric, including the water heater, so the electric bill is usually pretty high.

I'm convinced the management is incompetent or stupid or something for one reason. Well, there's someone different in the office every time we go in, so maybe a few smart ones snuck in there a couple of times. So get this - When you pay the rent you have to add your water/sewer/garbage bill to your rent price and write them a single check. One month I must have pushed the wrong button on my calculator or something, so the check that I wrote shorted them 60 cents. 60 CENTS. Now keep in mind that it had been a year and half of never paying the rent late for the two of us. So how do they respond' They leave a very threatening note on our door, telling us that our account was past-due 60 cents and that if we did not pay IMMEDIATELY, we would be evicted. Oh. That's lovely. Another time, they threatened US with eviction by way of a taped note on our door because our NEIGHBOR was putting here garbage outside of her door.

Last year when it got so cold the pipes froze, (get ready for this during the winter) they claimed that there was an "emergency" and they had to use the passage in our closet to get under the building. They barged into our apartment while we were both asleep one morning and we had to cover ourselves while the burly maintenance men and the lady from the leasing office started throwing stuff out of our closet. Again, lovely. They didn't actually do anything once they got under the building except tell us to wait for the pipes to unfreeze, but they did pull a bunch of stuff out of our closet.

Expect notes on your door at random times telling us that they're going to come in the "inspect." Those were always nice.

We initially moved here because my fiance was going to Mt. Hood CC and she didn't drive so we picked a place within walking distance. I was warned not to move here by internet reviews and a former co-worker, but I did not listen. Instead I told myself it couldn't be that bad, but it's pretty bad.

My biggest problem is the price. It's way to expensive for what it is. (Remember to add at least $100 the price of advertised rent because no utilities are included.) Pick a different place if you just want to be near the school. There's a really convenient bus line that travels along division and goes up to stark that drops you off right by the college. So if you don't drive, do that, but I strongly recommend not living here. It's not worth it.

It sounds like the office management has gotten even worse since I've left. They didn't do a thing about noisy neighbors when I was there either. They basically told us to deal with it. We originally moved there to be close to the college too, but it is NOT worth it!
