We lived in Buckman Heights Apartments for a year, and have a small child. We really enjoyed our time there, and - contrary to what I've read on this site - always had pleasant experience with management. We lived in a one-bedroom as well as a two-bedroom unit. We didn't hear noises from other apartments, had a lovely view of downtown, and always felt very secure. Our neighbors were all friendly and respectful as well.

The one complaint I would have is one that can't easily be rectified: the smoke. As with all inside-access properties, this was a big problem. There are people who literally stayed in their apartments all day and smoked, and god help you if you live near one of these people and have chosen not to smoke. We were very upset that our baby had to breathe it in - so much smoke that it felt like we were smokers ourselves - but I know that until smoking itself is illegal, nothing much can be done about this. The ventilation systems were great in the building, and they even installed weather stripping under our door, but nothing helped 100%.

When we moved into our corner two-bedroom unit, tne smoke issues mainly disappeared due to the corner location and cross breeze -except when people stood under our window to smoke!

My only other complaint is that the mandatory and random apartment inspections happened a bit too often for my taste, but having worked in the industry, I understand the need for them (and am glad that they do inspect, to prevent meth cooking for one!). (This is technically a low-income housing property, and therefore subject to these inspections, although the income restritions are much more lax than most LIHTC properties.)

All in all, this is a very attractive, well-maintained property with VERY reasonable rent for Portland. It's safe, very do-able if you happen to have children, and GREAT if you have dogs!
