I was a tenant for seven years (not once paying my rent late, mind you) and must say that things have definitely gone downhill at the complex. There was an accident in 2007 where a car drove through one of the railings near my apartment. Instead of properly repairing the damage, the owner used the old posts and gerryrigged a surely-not-to-code repair. I had two toilets and had many problems getting them both to work - someone came in and instead of fixing the broken one, they broke the one that was working so I had two non-working toilets. When one of them was eventually repaired, I gave up on getting them both working and just used one toilet.

Now, I moved out two months ago and they have still not returned my security deposit: "The check came back because there wasn't enough postage on it." "I gave the check to the owner, he should have sent it out." I sent a certified letter requesting my deposit back, which you are required to do before filing in small claims court. The certified letter came back with "refused" written on it. All of this over a $200 security deposit.

The rent is not bad, but it's not worth what you're saving.

I too moved out a few months ago. I did get my deposit back, but I let it be known that I cover all of my bases and will sue them if I don't get it within the allotted time. Make sure you follow up on this - take them to court if you have too - you can get double (or is it triple?) the money if you win. The owner is running that place into the ground! Good luck!
