These apts are terrible! It is a glorified slum. There are people regularly going through the dumpsters for recyclbles for drug money- probably residents. It is loud and the police are often in the development. Residents do not watch children so they are often getting into trouble or hanging out in the driveway. The apts. are not well made and if by thw woods - moldy. The management is very defensive andtries to pass off maintenence costs on you, when in fact the apts are shoddily made and maintained. People regularly blow off fireworks in the development and in the park. The development is surrounded by other developments and a a huge industrial complex so at night you regularly here god awful industrial sounds that can vibrate the whole apt. It was very depressing to live there and I can't believe how much better my whole family feels after movig out. Do not let people tell you St. Johns is up and coming. Its affordable because it is not a very nice place to live. Anyone considering it should check it out without management first. Pier park is taken over by rude disc golfers who let their enormous dogs off leash constantly. This is an apartment of last resort only!!! Oh, and forget about getting any deposits back no matter how you maintain the apt. or what the management tells you while living there.

I am poor, was poor, will probably be poor next year and into the future and am not a snob. My husband supports our family of four on a small wage and we have always worked hard our entire lives, as did our families growing up in Ohio- which, my friend, has a lot more problems than Oregon. When we lived at Parkside Commons we had hell neighbors, bad experiences with the management, and very bad experiences in general. I am glad you enjoy the apartments- perhaps you have a higher tolerance for firecrackers at all hours, drunken brawls, garbage everywhere, neglected and abused children wandering the driveway at night, cars revving engines and speeding over the hundreds of speed bumps toward children or whoever happens to be in the road. Not to say some people weren't decent, but the majority were not. Perhaps, everything has changed and its a great place to live, but there are much better places to live even when you are broke- I should know. I have lived and experienced many things in life , and I cringe every time I think of my 18 months in Parkside Commons. I have been in Portland nearly 5 years now, have lived in many supposed "bad neighborhoods" here and that apartment complex was by far the most depressing place. The management is always changing- cause the place sucks. The first manager that left when I lived there left because her car was vandalized and her life threatened by a tenant. If you notice the reviews of the apts. I am not the only one who does not recommend this place.

If you think this is a "last resort" style of living, you my friend have never seen the term "Last resort" truly lived out. For your information, the mang. has changed, all of what you speak of in your review has yet to be experienced by myself, and i have been here for over a year. Im not recommending anyone up root there family to live here. What you said about the park is true, the golfers do let there dogs run, and some of them do seem rude, i think that's the pot heads being stand offish.. But for the most part Park side Commons has made a dramatic change for itself, but in the effort to keep the low income and section 8 families out of the complex, the rent is a bit higher. Not to bad really. Sure, there upstairs neighbors can be heard, and there are things like the wood used to make the cabinets that i personally like to see changed, but for the money, and a chance to be right on Pier Park.. Well, its worth it until i can go buy a home. Your opinion on St. Johns may be right. I too think it is getting way to much rave from local realtors, it is NOT the next big thing in PDX! Thank GOD!! Cuz if i was to be surrounded by a bunch of pompest snobs such as your self, well i might as well be in the Pearl. No, it is not the next big thing, nor is it up and coming. Thank god!
