Get ready to bleed money

We lived in the loft Apt for 3 years. Yes the grounds are lovely, and I didn't see alot of crime in the neighborhood. However... Get ready to fork over thousands of dollars a year for electrical bills. First of all, from what we saw there is no insulation in the walls. the windows let in alot of cold air, or hot air in the summer. The apartments were constructed in the 60's with electric floor heaters, when you turn them on your meter spins at top speeds. The first Winter we spent here we were SHOCKED! The energy bill for Dec was $550. The front office's advise... Don't use your heaters. Okay so we got the bills down to $300 a month in the deep of winter keeping the house at an even 60 degrees and sleeping in 10 pairs of pajamas.
In the summer, they have an air conditioner provided us that cools 350 square feet, this is supposed to cool the whole 1100 square foot apt. At best we can cool it down to 85 degrees Don't try adding another air conditioner,WHY? Because the whole apartment is wired for very low wattage on the same breaker, to prevent fires. Meaning, you can blow dry your hair, but not while the air conditioner is on or you will trip the breaker.
The rent seems fairly decent, but when you factor in the electrical bill (and the $75 a month water bill) its not a deal at all.

we had our thermostat upgraded by the apt. maintenance guy and it saved us 65% on our heating. it is true about the air conditioning though
