Not bad, but the staff can be frustrating

Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2007
I moved into the fountain building about two years ago and I have really enjoyed my apartment and the location. My building mates have been pleasant and I only rarely hear my neighbors. My place was super clean when I moved in- overall I really love my place and have considered it home.
Since day one I found the staff to be fairly grumpy, but I used to work in property management and I know it can really be the pits, so I try to cut them all some slack. However, I've lived at the Village very peacefully for two years now and I still feel like nobody over there will go an inch out of their way to help me out, even though by now I have more than proved that I'm not a crack head. The way that they are all as sweet as pie until you actually need help with something is kind of degrading. Sometimes I am told one thing by one employee and then a completely different thing by someone else, so I tend to only call or go down there when I know someone in particular is working - otherwise it can be a wasted trip or a lesson in tolerance.
My rent went up significantly when my first lease ended, so I toured the tower building thinking that I might move over there and save some money. I was shocked to find that it was a completely different world. The building is very dingy, the carpets in the hallways are stained, the apartments are somewhat smelly and the appliances are older than I am. This is obviously an upkeep issue. Yes, the building is older than the fountain building, but there are areas where the paint job was simply never finished. The machines in the laundry room become broken and stay that way for months on end. I use the workout room every day and sometimes not a single treadmill will be functioning. Old building funk aside, the place could be brightened up significatly with a little fresh paint, new carpets and improved lighting.
Because of rent hikes and staff frustrations, I have investigated other apartments downtown and in many ways I find the Village at Lovejoy fountain to be superior. Living downtown can be noisy but I don't think its out of the ordinary and I have never felt unsafe in the vacinity of the building. I sold my car when I moved in because parking is expensive, but if you don't mind paying for it, there are always plenty of spots in the garage.
It really bums me out that the management can't bring itself to be just a little easier to deal with and prioritize obvious maintanence issues such as stained carpeting and broken machines. It would really enhance the experience of living here.
