Beautiful Apartments -- LOUSY neighborhood

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004
My husband and I moved here nearly a year ago and can hardly wait for our lease to be up. To be fair, they are nicest, most roomy apartments we've ever lived in and considering that I think the price is quite fair (we moved from the waterfront downtown and have twice the space at $500/mo less)... HOWEVER, they are full of false promises. We were told last January that the pool would be done by March, heated and open all year. Then on one of the hottest days of the year last summer they announce they were not building a pool. Several neighbors broke their leases and left because of it. When we signed our lease we were promised free cable high speed internet but were later informed they were putting in a T-1. They did... SEVERAL months later. It was slow and unreliable and we know choose to pay for our own cable service just to avoid the hassle (this of course adds $55 to our monthly expenses). We were also promised free membership to 24 Hour Fitness. This came in the form of 3-month all club passes... a little choppy (since you have to go thru the sign up procedure every 3 months... a major hassle), however we loved the club and thought it was great. Then this month they suddenly informed us they would be discontinuing that because they put in a crappy little exercise room on site... they converted a garage in the rental office, there arre about 5 pieces of equipment and will have limited hours although they originally said it would be open 24 hrs. a day. All in all a MASSIVE downgrade in services and we are far from happy about it since it is not what we were promised.
They also got greedy and built so many buildings they didn't leave a single square inch of space for children to play, so they play in the alleys that the garages open on. This makes it horribly noisy and even a little scary with kids skateboarding and riding bikes wrecklessly as you try to drive in to park. I am thrilled that we have a garage, but laugh at the thought that they consider it a 2 car garage (maybe if you own a VW bug and Cooper Mini). The buildings are so close together that we literally have heard neighbors having sex (not through the walls, through the open windows!). And when neighbors smoke on their balconies it comes straight into our apartment! The only noise problems we've had inside our building are neighbors thundering up and down their stairs... for some reason that noise comes through loud and clear.
We were the first tenants in this unit and called to report numerous maintenance issues (split doors, cabinet hingles that were screwed too tight and split the supporting wood, toilets that run constantly, etc.) but never saw a maintenance person (and we're just praying they don't blame us for all that wreckage when we move). The appliances (stove/over, washer/dryer and refrigerator) are very nice quality and, of course, brand new, but the dishwasher is pretty crappy and we have clean the dishes so completely before loading it that we only use it for sterilization basically. The garbage disposal is so/so... you need to run it a long time to make sure everything grinds.
In truth, however, the apartments are magnificent (rooming, high ceilings, tons of windows)... we just wish they wouldn't have made so many inflated promises and then welched on them and we DESPERATELY wish they would have planned some public spaces. Actually, perhaps we should be blaming the County for not having stricter requirments for requiring public space.
There are too many kids with nowhere to go to play... very noisy in the summer (again, all from the outside and not through the walls).
I would NOT recommend this place because of the broken promises and cramped neighborhood (and for God's sake, we're WELL out into the 'burbs here... there is no excuse for this kind of cramping). If we could take the apartment and move it somewhere else, we'd actually be quite happy to live in it.
I'm constantly amazed at the steady stream of people moving out (and imagine that quite of few of them are so desperate to leave they are breaking their leases since they don't stay for long... although I don't know that for a fact). The day our lease is up, we're out of here... and no, I couldn't really recommend it to others as much as I love the unit itself.
The staff is friendly and I think would like to be helpful, but are basically ineffective because their hands seem to be tied. I truly believe this is due to the unwillingness of the owners to live up to their advertised promises. We get promises and no action. And when we get really mad we discover that we have no recourse because the advertised promises (like the pool, for instance) was not specifically written into the lease.
Nice attitude.
